Ingrid Ellen Michaelson (born December 8, 1979) is an American singer-songwriter. She writes and performs pop music with different styles.

As of June 2024, she has released eight studio albums. She also has a compilation album and thirteen singles. Her popular songs include "The Way I Am" (2006) and "Girls Chase Boys" (2014). These songs sold many copies.

Early Life

Ingrid Ellen Michaelson was born on December 8, 1979, in New York City. Her father, Carl Michaelson, managed music rights for a publishing company. He also wrote music. Her mother, Elizabeth Egbert, was an artist who made sculptures. Her mother's family was from the Netherlands.

As a child, Michaelson performed in a musical theater group. It was called Staten Island Kids On Stage. She started playing piano at age four. She trained until age seven at Manhattan's Third Street Music School. She continued piano at the Jewish Community Center of Staten Island. There, she met vocal coach Elizabeth McCullough. McCullough worked with her through high school.

Michaelson graduated from Staten Island Technical High School. She also went to Binghamton University. She earned a degree in theater there. At Binghamton University, she was part of a singing group called the Binghamtonics. This group used only voices, no instruments. She was also in an improv comedy group and a theater group.

Music Career

Early Albums (2004–2008)

While living on Staten Island, Michaelson often performed on the streets of Lower Manhattan. She released her first album, Slow the Rain, herself on January 10, 2005.

In 2006, Michaelson independently released her second album, Girls and Boys. She shared this album on Myspace. Someone who chose music for the TV show Grey's Anatomy found her songs online. After this, many record companies wanted to sign her. Michaelson wanted to keep control over her music. So, she made a deal with Original Signal Recordings. This company helped sell and share her music.

Through Original Signal, Michaelson released Girls and Boys again on September 18, 2007. It reached number 63 on the Billboard charts. Music experts gave it good reviews. "The Way I Am" from the album was used in an Old Navy advertisement. In less than three weeks, her music was played on TV shows more than 65 times. In 2007, Ingrid played her first Holiday Hop, a yearly Christmas concert in New York City.

In 2006, Michaelson worked with William Fitzsimmons. She helped him with his album Goodnight.

Growing Success (2008–2010)

In October 2008, Michaelson released her third album, Be OK. This album collected songs, and the money from it went to help cancer research.

In December 2008, Michaelson and Sara Bareilles released "Winter Song." This song was part of The Hotel Café Presents Winter Songs. This was a collection of holiday songs by different female singers. Michaelson and Bareilles sang "Winter Song" for Barack Obama and his family. This was at the National Christmas Tree Lighting in December 2010.

In 2009, Michaelson released her fourth album, Everybody. Everybody first appeared at number 18 on the Billboard charts. It includes the song "Maybe".

In 2010, Michaelson helped write the song "Parachute" with Marshall Altman. It was for British singer Cheryl Cole. The song was on Cole's first solo album 3 Words. It reached number 5 on the UK Singles Chart. Michaelson first thought the song was too much like pop music for her to release it. But after producer Dan Romer changed it to sound more "interesting" and "funky," Michaelson released it as her own song.

On January 24, 2012, Michaelson released her fifth album, Human Again. Human Again first appeared at number 5 on the Billboard charts. It got good reviews, and critics liked its unique sound. To promote the album, Michaelson went on The Human Again Tour. She performed in North America and other countries.

In 2012, Michaelson worked with her husband and fellow musician Greg Laswell. They co-wrote and sang the duet "Landline." This song was on his album of the same name.

In September 2012, she took part in a project called "30 Songs / 30 Days." This project supported a book and media project about helping women around the world.

New Sounds and Broadway (2014–2017)

On February 4, 2014, Michaelson released "Girls Chase Boys." This was the first song from her album Lights Out. The song reached number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Afterlife" and "Time Machine" were released as the second and third songs.

On April 25, 2014, Lights Out was released. A special edition with six extra songs was released in November that year.

On April 29, 2016, Michaelson released the song "Hell No." This was the first song from her seventh studio album, It Doesn't Have to Make Sense. The album was released on August 26, 2016. In July, she released a second video for "Hell No." This video showed members of the Deaf West theater company using American Sign Language to show the song's words. To support the album, Michaelson started the Hell No Tour on October 6, 2016.

In 2016, Michaelson and AJR helped write their song "The Lotto." AJR later joined Michaelson on the Hell No Tour.

On May 12, 2017, Michaelson released a short album called Alter Egos. It had five songs that were changed or updated from It Doesn't Have to Make Sense. Each song featured other singers. These included Sara Bareilles, Tegan and Sara, AJR, Lucius, and The Civil Wars' John Paul White.

In 2017, Michaelson sang "Smallest Light" and "Stay Right Where You Are" for the movie The Space Between Us.

Michaelson performed on Broadway for the first time. She played Sonya Rostova in the musical Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. She performed from July 3 to August 13, 2017.

In 2024, she became a Broadway composer. She wrote the music and words for the musical The Notebook. This musical was nominated for a Tony Award.

Holiday and Inspired Music (2018–2021)

Michaelson's first movie role was in the comedy film Humor Me. It was released on January 12, 2018. She starred with Jemaine Clement and Elliott Gould.

On October 26, 2018, Michaelson released a Christmas album. It was called Ingrid Michaelson's Songs for the Season. On this album, Michaelson worked with Christina Perri, Grace VanderWaal, Leslie Odom Jr., and Will Chase. A special edition of the album was released in 2021. It included songs with Jason Mraz and Zooey Deschanel. Ingrid and Jason Mraz first released "Christmas Valentine" as an Amazon Original song on November 14, 2019. It was later added to the special edition of Songs for the Season in 2021.

On May 10, 2019, she released "Missing You." This was the first song from her ninth studio album, Stranger Songs. Michaelson first announced the album in January 2018. She said it was inspired by the Netflix series Stranger Things. The album was released on June 28, 2019.

In 2020, Ingrid sang on an acoustic version of Ben Rector's song "It Would Be You." In 2021, Ingrid Michaelson worked with British-Pakistani singer Zayn Malik. They released the song "To Begin Again" on March 17.

Michaelson has written music for TV shows. These include Little Fires Everywhere (nominated for an Emmy Award) and Tiny Beautiful Things. Both were for Hulu. She was also the main person in charge of music for Apple TV+’s Slumberkins. She created original songs for this series. Michaelson appeared as a special actor in Season 3 of Netflix’s Girls5Eva.

In July 2020, Michaelson was nominated for her first Emmy Award. This was for the song "Build it Up." She wrote it for the end of Hulu's show Little Fires Everywhere. Michaelson worked with Juan Ariza and Gabriel Mann. They wrote a new song "Not Gone," sang a different version of "Closer to Fine," and created the background music for the Hulu show Tiny Beautiful Things. The Notebook Musical and Recent Work (2022–Present)

In January 2019, Michaelson announced she was writing the music and words for the musical play based on The Notebook. The musical first showed at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in 2022. It then came to Broadway, officially opening on March 14, 2024. "Carry Me Home" won an award chosen by the audience for Favorite New Song. The musical was nominated for three Tony Awards. The album of the musical's songs reached number 1 on Billboard's chart for musical albums.

In 2022, Michaelson sang on Ariza's song "The Sky and Me." Later that year, Michaelson worked with A Great Big World. They released a new song called "It's Almost Christmas" on November 11, 2022. In 2024, Michaelson appeared as a guest in season 3 of Netflix's Girls5eva. She played Pixie, a folk singer-songwriter.

Michaelson released several songs from her album For the Dreamers. These included "Love Is" with Jason Mraz on February 2, and her own version of "What a Wonderful World" on May 23. She also released "It Never Ends" on May 30. The album was released on August 23, 2024.
