Ingrid Ellen Michaelson (born December 8, 1979) is an American singer-songwriter. She is known for her popular songs like "The Way I Am" (from 2006) and "Girls Chase Boys" (from 2014). Both songs were very successful on Billboard music charts. They also earned "platinum" awards, meaning they sold a lot of copies. Ingrid Michaelson has released many albums on her own, without a major record label.

Early Life and Music Beginnings
Ingrid Ellen Michaelson was born in New York City on December 8, 1979. Her father, Carl Michaelson, worked with music copyrights and was also a composer. Her mother, Elizabeth Egbert, was a sculptor.
When she was a child, Ingrid performed in a musical theater group. It was called Staten Island Kids On Stage. She started playing the piano at age four. She continued her piano lessons until she was seven at a music school in Manhattan. Later, she studied piano at the Jewish Community Center of Staten Island. There, she met a vocal coach who helped her through high school.
Ingrid Michaelson went to Staten Island Technical High School. She then studied theater at Binghamton University. At college, she was part of an a cappella singing group called the Binghamtonics. She also joined an improv comedy group and a theater company.
Music Career Highlights
First Albums: Slow the Rain and Girls and Boys
Ingrid Michaelson lived in Staten Island and often performed music on the streets of Lower Manhattan. She released her first album, Slow the Rain, on January 10, 2005. She released it herself.
In 2006, she independently released her second album, Girls and Boys. Like her first album, she shared her music on Myspace. A music producer for the TV show Grey's Anatomy discovered her songs online. After this, many record companies wanted to sign her. Ingrid wanted to keep control of her music. So, she made a deal with Original Signal Recordings. This company helped market and distribute her music.
Through this deal, Girls and Boys was re-released to a wider audience on September 18, 2007. The album reached #63 on the Billboard charts. Critics gave it good reviews. Her song "The Way I Am" was used in an Old Navy commercial. This song appeared in many TV shows and premieres. In 2007, Ingrid performed her first Holiday Hop. This is an annual Christmas concert in New York City.
New Music and Collaborations
In October 2008, Ingrid Michaelson released her third album, Be OK. This album was a charity record to help support cancer research.
In December 2008, Michaelson and Sara Bareilles released "Winter Song." This song was part of a holiday album featuring female singer-songwriters. Michaelson and Bareilles performed "Winter Song" for Barack Obama and his family. This was at the National Christmas Tree Lighting in December 2010.
In 2009, Michaelson released her fourth album, Everybody. This album reached #18 on the Billboard charts. It included the song "Maybe".
In 2010, Michaelson helped write the song "Parachute" for British singer Cheryl Cole. It was on Cole's first solo album and became a top 5 hit in the UK. Michaelson later released her own version of "Parachute."
On January 24, 2012, Michaelson released her fifth album, Human Again. This album debuted at #5 on the Billboard charts. Critics liked its unique sound. To promote the album, Michaelson went on The Human Again Tour. She performed in North America and other countries.
In 2012, she sang a duet called "Landline" with her husband, Greg Laswell. The song was on his album of the same name.
More Albums and Broadway Debut
On February 4, 2014, Michaelson released "Girls Chase Boys." This was the first song from her album Lights Out. The song reached #52 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Other songs from the album included "Afterlife" and "Time Machine."
Lights Out was released on April 25, 2014. A special edition with extra songs came out later that year.
On April 29, 2016, Michaelson released the song "Hell No." This was the first song from her seventh album, It Doesn't Have to Make Sense. The album was released on August 26, 2016. She also released a video for "Hell No" that included members of the Deaf West Theatre performing the lyrics in American Sign Language. Michaelson went on the Hell No Tour to support the album.
In 2017, Michaelson released an EP (a short album) called Alter Egos. It had five songs from It Doesn't Have to Make Sense but with guest singers. These included Sara Bareilles and AJR.
Michaelson also contributed songs to the movie The Space Between Us in 2017.
Ingrid Michaelson made her Broadway debut in 2017. She played the role of Sonya Rostova in the musical Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. She performed from July 3 to August 13, 2017.
Holiday Music and Stranger Songs
Michaelson appeared in the comedy film Humor Me, which was released on January 12, 2018.
On October 26, 2018, Michaelson released a Christmas album called Ingrid Michaelson's Songs for the Season. She worked with artists like Christina Perri and Leslie Odom Jr. on this album. A deluxe version of the album was released in 2021. It featured collaborations with Jason Mraz and Zooey Deschanel.
On May 10, 2019, she released "Missing You." This was the first song from her ninth album, Stranger Songs. Michaelson said the album was inspired by the Netflix series Stranger Things. The album was released on June 28, 2019.
In 2021, Ingrid Michaelson worked with British-Pakistani singer Zayn Malik on the song "To Begin Again."
Michaelson has also written songs for TV shows. These include Little Fires Everywhere and Tiny Beautiful Things. She was also a music producer for Apple TV+’s Slumberkins. In July 2020, she was nominated for an Emmy Award for her song "Build it Up" from Little Fires Everywhere.
The Notebook Musical and Recent Music
In January 2019, Michaelson announced she was writing the music and lyrics for a musical based on the book The Notebook. The musical first opened in Chicago in 2022. It then premiered on Broadway on March 14, 2024. The song "Carry Me Home" won a Broadway.com Audience Choice Award. The musical also received three nominations at the 77th Tony Awards. The original Broadway cast recording of the musical reached No. 1 on Billboard's Cast Albums Chart. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award.
In 2024, Michaelson made a guest appearance in season 3 of Netflix's Girls5eva. She played a folk singer-songwriter named Pixie.
Michaelson released several songs from her album For the Dreamers. These included "Love Is" with Jason Mraz and a cover of "What a Wonderful World." The album was released on August 23, 2024.
