Jonas (also known as Jonas L.A. for its second season) is a fun Disney Channel Original Series. It was created by Michael Curtis and Roger S. H. Schulman. The show stars the real-life band, the Jonas Brothers.
The first episode was filmed in September 2008. The series officially started on Disney Channel on May 2, 2009. It was one of the first Disney Channel shows to be filmed with a single camera, like a movie, instead of multiple cameras like most sitcoms. It also didn't use a laugh track.
On November 9, 2009, it was announced that Jonas would get a second season. For this new season, the show's name changed to Jonas L.A.. This change happened because the story moved from New Jersey to Los Angeles. The second season began on June 20, 2010, and finished on October 3, 2010. In November 2010, Disney Channel shared that the series would not have a third season.

About the Show
After the Jonas Brothers appeared on an episode of Hannah Montana, Disney Channel started working on a TV show and a movie called Camp Rock with them.
The first idea for the Jonas TV show was very different! It was going to be about the band members secretly working as spies to save the world. Their band concerts were just a cover for their secret missions. The show was even called J.O.N.A.S. which stood for "Junior Operatives Networking as Spies." The brothers would try to hide their secret lives from their mom and their younger brother, Frankie.
However, the Jonas Brothers became super popular very quickly. The creators decided it would be more interesting to show them as a band trying to live normal lives. So, the spy idea was dropped. The show's title changed to JONAS, without the dots. Nick Jonas said the show became "about us being a band and balancing a normal life."
The show's creators compared Jonas to old TV shows about bands, like The Monkees. They wanted to capture the excitement and fun of a real band's life, just like those older shows did.
Meet the Characters
Main Characters
- Joseph "Joe" Lucas (Joe Jonas) – Joe is the lead singer of the band JONAS. He also plays keyboards and rhythm guitar. He's known for being a bit of a flirt and cares a lot about his hair. Joe is often goofy but can also be serious. He always carries a blue panda pencil. Joe and Stella, the band's stylist, have liked each other since they were kids. They tried not to date so it wouldn't mess up their friendship or work. But they eventually became a couple at the end of season 1. In season 2, Joe tries acting in Los Angeles. He dates an actress named Vanessa, but he still has feelings for Stella. They get back together in the end.
- Kevin Percy Lucas (Kevin Jonas) – Kevin is the oldest brother and is usually very wild and funny. He loves to imagine silly animals, like an otter playing the trumpet! Kevin often comes up with crazy plans, but sometimes he has really smart ideas too. He's not good at lying; his voice gets super high-pitched when he tries! Kevin plays lead guitar and sings backup for JONAS. He also enjoys making films.
- Nicholas "Nick" Lucas (Nick Jonas) – Nick is the calmest and most serious brother. He's the drummer for JONAS and sometimes plays guitar. Nick is known for falling in love quickly. He's good at coming up with creative plans. Nick also loves to bake, especially his famous blue cookies! In season 2, he starts dating Macy Misa, who used to be a huge fan but has now become a good friend. Nick has Type 1 diabetes, just like Nick Jonas in real life.
- Stella Malone (Chelsea Kane Staub) – Stella is JONAS's stylist and Macy's best friend. She's known the Lucas brothers since she was three. Stella and Joe have a strong connection, but they tried to avoid dating to protect their friendship. She invented a cool outfit selector called the StellaVator. Stella is always texting and gets annoyed when her outfits get ruined. She's not good at sports but is an amazing seamstress. After a lot of back and forth, Stella and Joe become a couple in the series finale.
- Macy Misa (Nicole Anderson) – Macy is Stella's best friend and used to be the president of the JONAS fan club. In season 1, she would get so nervous around the band that she'd faint or accidentally hurt them! She's very athletic and works at her mom's thrift store. Macy is also tone deaf, meaning she can't sing well. Later in season 1, she becomes real friends with the boys. In season 2, Macy changes a lot and becomes more relaxed. Nick starts to like her, and they begin secretly dating.
- Thomas "Tom" Lucas (John Ducey) – Tom is the father of Joe, Nick, Kevin, and Frankie. He's also the manager of the band JONAS. He often gives his sons good advice, especially about girls. He likes to play hide-and-seek with Frankie.
Other Characters
- Frankie Lucas (Frankie Jonas) – Frankie is the youngest Lucas brother. He always tries to get attention and hopes to perform with the band someday. He's very fast and good at hide-and-seek. Frankie has a crush on Macy.
- Big Man (Robert "Big Rob" Feggans) – He is the band's bodyguard and is always with them. He lives with the boys in Los Angeles.
- Dennis Zimmer "DZ" (Adam Hicks) – A new friend the band meets in Los Angeles. He's the son of a rich music producer and loves to rap.
- Vanessa Paige (Abby Pivaronas) – A famous actress who stars in a movie with Joe. She briefly dates Joe in season 2.
- Kiara Tyshanna (China Anne McClain) – Big Man's niece. She finds out about Nick and Macy's secret relationship.
Making the Show
The show was filmed at Hollywood Center Studios, where many other Disney Channel shows like The Suite Life on Deck were made. In the first season, the story was set in New Jersey. It showed the brothers trying to live normal lives while being famous. For the second season, the show moved to Los Angeles and focused more on drama and ongoing storylines.
In November 2010, Disney Channel announced that Jonas L.A. would not have a third season. However, they said they would still work with the Jonas Brothers in the future.
In their 2019 documentary Chasing Happiness, the Jonas Brothers said they regretted doing the TV series. They felt it wasn't very good and might have hurt their band's image. Nick felt that the second season especially limited their growth as musicians.
Who Was Cast
Nicole Anderson first tried out for the role of Stella, but Chelsea Staub got the part. Later, when the show's story changed, the creators decided Stella needed a best friend. They offered the role of Macy to Nicole Anderson, who is Chelsea Staub's real-life best friend!
The show was made specifically for Kevin, Nick, and Joe Jonas. The role of Frankie Lucas was also created for Frankie Jonas, their real younger brother. Even Robert "Big Rob" Feggans, the Jonas Brothers' real-life head of security, played the character of Big Man!
