History of Friends for Change
In 2009, 29 Disney stars joined a TV and radio campaign. They wanted to encourage young fans to help the environment. The campaign focused on four main areas: climate, waste, water, and animal homes.
Stars like Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and the Jonas Brothers were part of it. They appeared in short videos (30 seconds to 2 minutes). These videos were shown on Disney Channel and Radio Disney.
Kids could promise online to do things that help the environment. For example, they could promise to recycle more. They could also help decide how Disney would spend one million dollars. This money went to different environmental programs.
The "Friends for Change" idea took the place of the Disney Channel Games in 2009 and 2010. Later, the first Disney's Friends for Change Games started on June 24, 2011.
A special 30-minute show was also made. It was called "Lights, Camera, Take Action! Backstage with Disney's Friends for Change." Tiffany Thornton hosted this show. It showed how the project was made behind the scenes.
When stars finished their shows on Disney Channel, they often left the program. This happened with stars from Hannah Montana and Jonas. By April 2012, 36 Disney Channel stars were part of the program. Also, 22 former Disney Channel stars had left.
