Thriii (pronounced "three") is an American girl group made up of three sisters: China Anne McClain, Sierra McClain, and Lauryn McClain. They formed their group in 2005. Over the years, they have been known by different names. These names include 3mcclaingirls, McClain Sisters, and just McClain.
All three sisters also acted in the movie Daddy's Little Girls (2007). For this film, they released a song called "Daddy's Girl." In 2011, they signed with Hollywood Records. They even opened for Big Time Rush on their Better with U Tour in Houston. However, they left the record label in 2013 without releasing an album. In June 2020, the group returned with a new name, Thriii. They then released their single "My Sanity."
About the Sisters
The three sisters were all born and grew up in Decatur, Georgia. Sierra Aylina McClain was born on March 16, 1994. Lauryn McClain was born on January 9, 1997. China Anne McClain was born on August 25, 1998.
Their family is very artistic and musical. Their father, Michael McClain, is a music producer. He produced Solange Knowles' first album. Their mother, Shontell McClain, writes songs and used to write screenplays. The sisters also have a younger brother named Gabriel McClain. He was born on April 17, 2001.
The sisters loved watching Disney films and classic musicals as they grew up. In 2004, they became very interested in music. They watched their father write and produce songs. This inspired the girls to start writing their own songs. They also began to create dance routines. Besides acting, singing, and dancing, all three sisters can play the guitar, bass, and piano.
Their Music Journey
Early Years: 3mcclaingirls (2005–2010)
In 2005, a friend of their father, who worked in music, visited their home. He heard the sisters sing. He then encouraged director Rob Hardy to have China audition for his 2005 movie The Gospel. China got the role of Alexis, and her sisters were also in the movie. This made the sisters serious about a music career. They officially formed their girl group, calling themselves the 3mcclaingirls.
They recorded their first song, "Silly Games." Their father, Michael McClain, produced the song. Their mother, Shontell McClain, wrote it. In 2006, China joined the main cast of Tyler Perry's House of Payne as Jazmine Payne. Sierra also made guest appearances on the show. In 2007, the group starred in the film Daddy's Little Girls as the James sisters.
In 2008, the group recorded "Daddy's Girl," a song inspired by the movie. They released it only on MySpace. Also in 2008, the group started posting videos on their YouTube channel. In these videos, they sang cover versions of popular songs. They also continued to act in different films and TV shows.
McClain Sisters and Hollywood Records (2011–2012)
The sisters first thought about naming their group "III." This number would represent the three McClain girls. But they decided against it. Instead, they changed their group name to the McClain Sisters. In the same year, China got her own show on the Disney Channel called A.N.T. Farm.
On October 11, 2011, the A.N.T. Farm soundtrack was released. The group had two songs on it: "Perfect Mistake" and "Electronic Apology." The group had plans to release their first album with Hollywood Records, but it never happened. In December, the group sang their version of "Jingle Bell Rock" at the 2011 Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade.
In March 2012, the group officially signed with Hollywood Records. On March 4, 2012, they were the opening act for Big Time Rush. This was at the Houston Rodeo during their Better with U Tour.
On March 11, 2012, they performed their new song called "Rise" at the Mall of America. The sisters wrote this song, and their father produced it. "Rise" was the main song used to promote the Disneynature film Chimpanzee. The song was released on March 23, 2012. Its music video first aired on March 25, 2012, during an episode of Austin & Ally. It was also a featured song for Disney's Friends for Change. The music video was later put online on March 26, 2012. On April 9, 2012, McClain performed at the 2012 White House Easter Egg Roll.
On September 11, 2012, their single "The Great Divide" was released. This song was featured in the Disney movie Secret of the Wings. It was also on the film's soundtrack, Disney Fairies: Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust. The song reached number 4 on Billboard's US Kid Digital Songs chart. On October 2, 2012, their version of "Jingle Bell Rock" was included on the album Disney Channel Holiday Playlist.
On November 2, 2012, the McClain Sisters released their first official single, "Go." Lauryn and Sierra appeared as guest stars and performed this song with China. This happened on November 23, 2012, during the A.N.T. Farm episode "chANTs of a Lifetime." In November 2012, the group performed at the Hollywood Christmas Parade. This event took place at Universal CityWalk Hollywood.
Leaving Hollywood Records and Becoming McClain (2013–2016)
On March 5, 2013, the soundtrack album Shake It Up: I Love Dance was released. The group performed their song "Sharp as a Razor" on it. In December 2013, China announced on Twitter that A.N.T. Farm would end after its third season. Soon after this news, the McClain Sisters left Hollywood Records.
After leaving the record label, the group changed their name. They went from McClain Sisters to simply McClain. In December 2013, the group performed again at the Hollywood Christmas Parade at Universal CityWalk Hollywood. The group released an official lyric video for their song "He Loves Me" on YouTube on December 14, 2013.
The song then became available on iTunes on February 20, 2014. On April 26, 2014, McClain performed at the pre-show for the 2014 Radio Disney Music Awards. They also presented an award there. In May, McClain performed with Soulja Boy and Drake Bell. This was at the 4th Annual "Move Your Body" celebration in Virginia. They supported Michelle Obama's Let's Move! program. In June, the group performed at Thirst Project's gala event. On June 29, McClain had their first concert where they were the main act. It was at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California. One month before the show, in May, the sisters promoted their concert. They did this by performing on the talk show Home & Family.
From summer to fall 2014, the group toured the United States. They performed at many state fairs. These included the Wisconsin State Fair, Delaware State Fair, West Virginia State Fair, North Carolina State Fair, York Fair, and the Ohio State Fair. In August 2014, McClain also performed at Six Flags Over Texas. They also performed at the 19th Arthur Ashe Kids' Day. Later that year, McClain released their Christmas song called "The Holiday Song" on December 13.
In 2015, the group released the song "Clip My Wings." This song was featured in the film The Sparrows: The Nesting. It was also on the film's soundtrack The Sparrows: Now & Then. In 2016, the group released their last single, "Feelin' Like," on their SoundCloud page. After this, McClain took a break. During this time, all three sisters focused on their acting careers.
Return as Thriii (2020–Present)
In June 2020, the group came back from their break. They changed their name to Thriii. They then released their new single "My Sanity." Their first official performance under the name Thriii was at Radio Disney Presents ARDYs Summer Playlist.
