Christy Turlington Burns, born on January 2, 1969, is a famous American fashion model. She became very well-known in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a 'supermodel'. She was the face of Calvin Klein's Eternity perfume in 1989 and again in 2014. She also works with Maybelline makeup. Grace Coddington, a creative director at Vogue magazine, once called her "the most beautiful woman in the world."

Early Life

Christy was born in Walnut Creek, California. She was one of three daughters. Her dad, Dwain, was a pilot, and her mom, María, was a flight attendant from El Salvador. Christy grew up following her mother's Roman Catholic faith.

She was discovered by a photographer named Dennie Cody. This happened while she was riding a horse in Miami, Florida. Her dad was working there at the time. Christy started modeling after school when she was 14. She also modeled during summer breaks while attending Monte Vista High School.

When she turned 18, she moved to New York City to model full-time. She later finished high school. In 1994, she went back to college. She graduated with honors from New York University in 1999. During the 1990s, Christy appeared in several films. These included Unzipped, a documentary about fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi. She was also in Prêt-à-Porter and Catwalk. Catwalk was a documentary about her life on the fashion runways.

Christy has been on the covers of many international fashion magazines. These include Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, and Marie Claire. She has also been featured in ads for top brands. Some of these are Calvin Klein, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, and Versace.

She also appeared in two music videos. In 1986, she was in Duran Duran's "Notorious" video. In 1990, she was in George Michael's "Freedom!" video. This video featured many famous supermodels of that time.

Every Mother Counts

After her documentary came out, Christy started Every Mother Counts (EMC). This is a non-profit organization. Its goal is to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. Every Mother Counts helps people learn about maternal health. They also raise money for programs around the world. EMC supports programs in places like Haiti, Uganda, and the United States.

In 2000, Christy met actor and director Edward Burns at a party. They got engaged later that year. They briefly split up but reunited and married in June 2003. Christy was pregnant at the time. She has two children with Edward: a daughter named Grace (born 2003) and a son named Finn (born 2006). Christy's sister Kelly is married to Edward's brother, Brian Burns.

Christy's father died from lung cancer. Because of this, Christy is an activist against smoking. She started smoking when she was 13. She quit smoking at age 26. In 2000, at age 31, she had a lung scan. It showed she had early signs of emphysema.

Yoga Practice

Christy practices yoga, specifically Jivamukti. She has been doing yoga since 1987. She practices a few times a week. She believes yoga has helped her feel closer to her Catholic faith.

She wrote a book called Living Yoga: Creating A Life Practice. It was first published in 2002. Christy also helped edit an issue of Yoga Journal magazine in 2001.
