Dawn Alisha Lott is a super smart mathematician who works at Delaware State University. She is a professor there, teaching about science and computers. Since 2009, she has also been in charge of the university's special honors program for top students.

What Does a Mathematician Do?

Dawn Lott studies something called numerical partial differential equations. This is a fancy way of saying she uses math to understand how things move and change.

Her Amazing Studies

Dr. Lott's research helps us understand things like:

  • How strong materials behave (solid mechanics).
  • How liquids and gases flow (fluid mechanics).
  • How our bodies work, like blood flow (biomechanics).

She has also written papers about solitons. These are special waves that keep their shape even when they travel long distances. Imagine a perfect wave that never breaks apart!

Her Journey in Education and Career

Dawn Lott is an African-American mathematician. She has worked very hard to get where she is today.

School Days

She went to Bucknell University and got her first degree in math in 1987. Then, she earned a master's degree from Michigan State University in 1989.

For her highest degree, a PhD, she studied at Northwestern University. She finished her PhD in 1994. Her special project was about how materials can form "shear bands" when they are stretched or pushed.

Working as a Scientist

After finishing her studies, Dr. Lott did more research at the University of Maryland, College Park from 1994 to 1997.

In 1998, she became a teacher at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Then, in 2003, she moved to Delaware State University, where she still teaches and inspires students today.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Lott has received many awards for her important work and her dedication to helping others.

Special Lectures

In 2011, she was chosen to give the AWM/MAA Falconer Lecturer talk. This is a very important lecture for mathematicians. Her talk was about using math to understand aneurysms. An aneurysm is when a blood vessel bulges out, which can be very dangerous. Math helps doctors understand and treat them better.

University and Community Awards

Her university has also recognized her efforts:

  • In 2013, she won an award for being an excellent advisor to students.
  • In 2014, she received an award for her great service to the university and the community.

Honored for Her Achievements

In 2019, she was honored by a group called Mathematically Gifted & Black. They celebrate amazing Black mathematicians during Black History Month.

In 2021, Dr. Lott became a Fellow of the Association for Women in Mathematics. This honor was given to her because she works hard to help women succeed in math. She has been a leader, a mentor, and a speaker, helping many women earn their advanced degrees in math.
