Dayang Kalangitan (ᜃᜎᜅᜒᜆᜈ᜔) was a powerful female leader in early Philippine history. She lived from about 1450 to 1515. She was known as a Dayang, which means a noble lady or princess, of the ancient kingdom of Pasig.
Dayang Kalangitan first ruled Pasig alongside her husband, Rajah Lontok. Later, she became the sole ruler of their lands. She is one of the few known female leaders from the time before the Spanish arrived in the Philippines.

Who Was Dayang Kalangitan?
Dayang Kalangitan was a very important figure in the history of the Philippines. She was a respected leader during a time when kingdoms were forming and growing. Her name in the ancient Baybayin script was ᜃᜎᜅᜒᜆᜈ᜔.
She ruled from her main base in a place called Bitukang Manók, which is now part of Pasig. Her children included Dayang Panginoan, Dayang Lahat, Rajah Salalila (who later became Rajah Sulaiman I) of Maynila, and Gat Kahiya.
Her Early Life and Rule
Dayang Kalangitan was married to Gat Lontok, who later became Rajah Lontok of Tondo. Together, they started a small kingdom. This kingdom was located upstream to the east of Tondo, in the area known as Bitukang Manók. Today, this area is Parian Creek in Pasig.
Around the year 1450, Dayang Kalangitan became the sole ruler of both Tondo and the lands she had established with her husband. To make her kingdom stronger, her daughter, Dayang Panginoan, married Prince Balagtas. He was the son of Empress Sasaban of Namayan, another important kingdom.
Challenges and Changes
Around the year 1500, the Sultanate of Brunei launched an attack on the Kingdom of Tondo. After this, the Sultanate of Brunei established the Kingdom of Maynila. They placed Dayang Kalangitan's son, Salalila, as the new ruler of Maynila. This was a big change for the region.
Her Legacy and Successors
Dayang Kalangitan's son, Salalila, took over as ruler after her. He later converted to Islam and became known by his more famous name, Sulaiman.
After Salalila, Tondo and Maynila became separate kingdoms. Tondo was then ruled by Salalila's oldest son, Lakan Dula. Maynila was ruled by Rajah Matanda and Rajah Sulayman. The kingdom of Namayan came under the rule of Rajah Kalamayin. Dayang Kalangitan's leadership helped shape these important kingdoms in early Philippine history.
