Daykin is a small village in Jefferson County, Nebraska, United States. In 2020, about 157 people lived there.

History of Daykin

Daykin was started by a man named John Daykin. He was a train conductor and also worked with stone. In 1869, John Daykin bought land in Nebraska. This land later became the village of Daykin. He is also famous for driving the train that carried Abraham Lincoln's body back to Springfield, Illinois.

Daykin's Early Days

At one time, Daykin had almost 300 people living there. The village had many different businesses. There was a doctor's office, a butcher shop, and even a jewelry store. You could also find a laundromat, a veterinarian, a hotel, and a blacksmith.

Daykin Today

Today, Daykin still has several businesses. These include a Farmers CO-OP, the Daykin Country Store, and a lumber yard. There's also a photography studio, a hardware store, and a hair salon. You can find Craig's Automotive, Kenny's Bar and Grill, and a Bed and Breakfast. The village also has its own Post Office. The Jefferson County Bank was built in 1887. It has been open ever since, even through tough times like the 1930s market crash.

Schools in Daykin

The old Daykin Public School building is now the Daykin Community Building. It was built in 1935. Daykin schools taught students from kindergarten to 12th grade starting in 1926. Most of the original building from 1935 is still there. Some parts, like the elementary classrooms, were moved. The gym was also made smaller after a renovation.

Now, students from Daykin go to Meridian School. This school district, called the 303 Nebraska School District, includes students from Daykin, Fairbury, Western, Alexandria, and Tobias.

Churches in Daykin

Daykin has two churches within the village. These are St. John's Lutheran Church and St. John's United Methodist Church. Both churches were built in 1888. The Daykin Immanuel Church is located a few miles outside of Daykin.

The Windmill Town

Daykin is known as the "Windmill Town." In the 1930s, the village was even featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!. It was because Daykin had more windmills per person than any other town in Nebraska. In 1949, a water tower was built. This tower replaced almost all the windmills. Only one windmill remains today. It stands on the lawn in front of the Daykin Community Building. It reminds everyone of Daykin's unique history.

Daykin is located at 40°19′19″N 97°17′56″W / 40.321817°N 97.299009°W / 40.321817; -97.299009. It is a very small village. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village covers about 0.16 square miles (0.43 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the village limits.
