History of Dayton Township

Dayton Township was officially created in the year 1857. It was given its name to honor William L. Dayton.

Communities in Dayton Township

There are no big cities or towns that are officially separate governments within Dayton Township. Instead, there are smaller areas known as unincorporated communities. This means they are part of the township's government.

East Dayton

  • East Dayton is one of these communities. It sits right on the border between Dayton Township and Wells Township. You can find it at a place called Hurds Corner and along M-46, which is also known as Sanilac Road 43°24′39″N 83°17′07″W / 43.41083°N 83.28528°W / 43.41083; -83.28528. This community was first settled in 1856.

Silverwood

  • Silverwood is another unincorporated community. It is in the northeast part of the township 43°19′24″N 83°14′53″W / 43.32333°N 83.24806°W / 43.32333; -83.24806 (Silverwood). Silverwood is located where Marlette, Clifford, and Silverwood roads meet. It is also on the edge of Rich Township in Lapeer County.

Geography and Rivers

The land in Dayton Township is shaped by two important rivers. The southern part of the township has small streams and creeks that flow into the Flint River. The northern part has streams that lead to the Cass River.

The United States Census Bureau says that the township covers a total area of about 36.2 square miles (94 km2). Most of this area, about 35.8 square miles (93 km2), is land. A smaller part, about 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2), is water.

In the year 2000, there were 1,869 people living in Dayton Township. These people lived in 679 households, and 530 of these were families.
