About DeKalb
DeKalb is located in the eastern part of South Carolina. You can find it about 9 miles north of a bigger town called Camden. It sits right along US Route 521, which is a main road in the area. The community has its own ZIP code, which is 29175.
How DeKalb Got Its Name
DeKalb was named after a very important person from history. The community honors Baron DeKalb, whose full name was Johann de Kalb. He was a German soldier who came to America to help during the American Revolutionary War.
Baron DeKalb was a brave general who fought for American independence. He was a hero in many battles. Sadly, he was badly wounded and died during the Battle of Camden in 1780. Naming the community DeKalb was a way to remember his courage and sacrifice.
