DeMarco Morgan is an American broadcast journalist who has worked as a news anchor and reporter. He was previously an anchor at ABC News. He also co-anchored a show called GMA3: What You Need to Know with Eva Pilgrim.
Early Life and Education
DeMarco Morgan grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He finished high school at Booker T. Washington High School in 1997. While in high school, he had an internship at a TV station called KOTV.
After high school, Morgan went to college. In 2001, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Jackson State University in Mississippi. The next year, in 2002, he earned his Master's Degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. While studying at Columbia, he helped start a student group for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). He also interned with famous TV shows like CBS Evening News and 48 Hours. He was recognized with several special scholarships during this time.
Community Involvement
DeMarco Morgan believes in giving back to his community. He has volunteered with groups like Big Brothers Big Sisters. He has also helped the American Cancer Society and the NAACP. He served on the board for the YMCA. He is also an active member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
Career Journey
Morgan's career in broadcasting began while he was studying for his master's degree. He covered the September 11 attacks for his journalism school. He also taught journalism at Jackson State University for two years. Later, he taught English at Milwaukee Area Technical College.
His first reporting job after graduation was at WJTV in Jackson, Mississippi. In 2004, he moved to WISN in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There, he co-anchored the news for three years. In 2007, he joined WTVJ in Miami as an anchor and reporter.
In December 2008, Morgan joined WNBC in New York. This is a main station for NBC. He worked as a weekend anchor and also did news updates for MSNBC. In January 2012, he moved to WXIA in Atlanta. He co-anchored the 6 P.M. newscast and reported for the 11 P.M. news. While in Atlanta, Morgan also taught journalism classes at Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University. In October 2015, he joined CBS News as a correspondent.
On April 17, 2019, Morgan moved to KCBS in Los Angeles. He became the weekday morning anchor for their early news shows. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he also anchored some newscasts for WCBS in New York. He even anchored the CBS Weekend News from Los Angeles. This happened because some CBS employees in New York were sick.
In late 2022, Morgan became a correspondent and anchor for ABC News. He quickly became part of the anchor team for GMA3: What You Need to Know. This was due to changes with the show's previous anchors. In May 2023, Morgan and Eva Pilgrim were named permanent anchors for the show. They joined Dr. Jennifer Ashton.
Awards and Recognitions
DeMarco Morgan has received many awards throughout his career. In 2001, while still in college, he was one of the top 10 college journalists in the country. He was the only African-American male on this list.
While working in Milwaukee, Morgan was the Honorary Grand Marshal for the United Negro College Fund for two years. He also received several awards from the Associated Press for his broadcasting work.
In 2006, Ebony Magazine recognized Morgan as "One of America's Young Leaders of the Future." This was for his commitment to helping his community. In the same year, he received the NABJ National Community Service Award.
In 2009, Morgan received the "Thurgood Marshall Prestige Award." This award recognized his community service during his time in New York.
