DeWanda Wise (born May 30, 1984) is an American actress. She is well-known for her role in the Netflix comedy-drama series She's Gotta Have It. This show was a modern version of a movie by Spike Lee. She has also appeared in many other movies and TV shows.

Early Life and Education
DeWanda Wise was born in Jessup, Maryland. She grew up in different towns in Maryland, including Woodlawn, Laurel, and Baltimore. When she was in high school at Atholton High School, she first thought about becoming a therapist. However, she changed her mind after taking a psychology class.
Her acting journey began in high school. Her drama teacher offered her a part in a play instead of detention, and she discovered her love for acting. In 2006, DeWanda graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She earned a special degree in drama and urban studies. While in college, she worked at a grocery store and as a resident assistant.
Acting Career
DeWanda Wise started her career with small roles on popular TV shows. These included Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, The Good Wife, and Boardwalk Empire. Her first movie role was in the 2007 drama Spinning into Butter. She also appeared in movies like Steam and Precious.
In 2016, she starred in an independent movie called How to Tell You're a Douchebag. The next year, she had a recurring role in the TV series Underground. She also starred with Sanaa Lathan in the miniseries Shots Fired.
Starring Roles and Big Movies
DeWanda Wise became widely known in 2017. She played the main character, Nola Darling, in the Netflix series She's Gotta Have It. The show ran for two seasons.
In 2018, she was supposed to be in Disney's Captain Marvel. However, she had to leave the movie because of conflicts with her filming schedule for the Netflix series. That same year, she appeared in the comedy film The Weekend.
In 2019, DeWanda starred with Gina Rodriguez and Brittany Snow in the Netflix romantic comedy Someone Great. In one memorable scene, she and Gina Rodriguez sang and danced to Lizzo's song "Truth Hurts". This helped make the song much more popular, and it later became a number one hit.
More recently, DeWanda Wise has appeared in several major films. She co-starred with Kevin Hart in the comedy-drama Fatherhood (2021). She also had a big role as Kayla Watts in the blockbuster movie Jurassic World Dominion (2022). In 2024, she starred in the horror film Imaginary.

DeWanda Wise married actor Alano Miller in 2009. They got married after dating for only three months. She follows a vegan diet. DeWanda lives in Pasadena, California.
