DeWanda Wise (born May 30, 1984) is an American actress. She is known for her roles in TV shows and movies. She starred in the Netflix comedy-drama series She's Gotta Have It. This show was based on a film by Spike Lee. She also appeared in the movie Jurassic World Dominion.
Early Life and School
Wise was born in Jessup, Maryland. She grew up in different towns in Maryland, like Woodlawn and Laurel. When she was in high school, she first thought about becoming a therapist. But after taking a psychology class, she changed her mind.
She started acting during her second year at Atholton High School. Her drama teacher offered her a part in a play. This was instead of getting into trouble! In 2006, she finished college at New York University. She earned a degree in drama and urban studies. While in college, she worked part-time jobs. She was a resident assistant and stocked shelves at a grocery store.
Acting Career
DeWanda Wise began her acting journey on television. She appeared in episodes of popular shows. These included Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Good Wife. Her first movie role was in the 2007 drama Spinning into Butter. She also had smaller parts in films like Precious.
In 2017, she had a big year. She was in the TV series Underground. She also starred in the miniseries Shots Fired. That same year, she got a main role in the Netflix series She's Gotta Have It. She played the character Nola Darling. The show ran for two seasons.
Wise was cast in the Disney movie Captain Marvel in 2018. However, she had to leave the project. This was because of scheduling problems with her Netflix show. She then appeared in the comedy film The Weekend. In 2019, she starred with Gina Rodriguez in the romantic comedy Someone Great. In this movie, she helped make the song "Truth Hurts" by Lizzo very popular.
Later, she acted alongside Kevin Hart in the movie Fatherhood (2021). She also played a key role in the big dinosaur movie Jurassic World Dominion (2022).
Personal Life
DeWanda Wise married actor Alano Miller in 2009. They had only been dating for three months. She follows a vegan diet. Today, she lives in Pasadena, California.
