De Moss Springs is a small, unincorporated community in Sherman County, Oregon. It's located about 3 miles (5 km) northeast of the town of Moro, right along U.S. Route 97.
For many years, from 1887 to 1923, De Moss Springs even had its own post office. Around 1900, a train company called the Columbia Southern Railway built a station here. They named it "De Moss," and it was part of their route to a town called Shaniko.
The De Moss Family and Their Legacy
The name "De Moss Springs" comes from a family named De Moss. This family was very important to the area. They grew wheat on their farms and also ran a fun recreation park right at the springs.
The De Moss family was also known for their amazing musical talent. They formed a touring music group called the Lyric Bards. Imagine traveling around and performing! The leader of this musical family was James M. De Moss. He moved to Sherman County in 1883 from a place called North Powder. Before moving, he had managed a stagecoach station, which was like a bus stop for horse-drawn carriages.
