History of North Powder
North Powder was officially planned out, or "plat]]ted," in 1885 or 1886. This happened when the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company built its railway line through the area. Before the railway, North Powder was already a busy stop for stagecoaches.
When the railway arrived, a businessman named David Eccles started the Hall Brothers Lumber Company in the town. This helped North Powder grow.
The city also became important because it had a large icehouse. This icehouse supplied ice to special refrigerator cars used by Pacific Fruit Express. These cars kept food cold as it traveled across the country. Sadly, the icehouse burned down in the 1930s.
