De Soto is a small village located in Jackson County, Illinois, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,407 people lived there. The village gets its name from Hernando de Soto, a famous explorer who discovered the Mississippi River.

Where is De Soto, Illinois?
De Soto is in the northeastern part of Jackson County. A main road, U.S. Route 51, goes right through the middle of the village. This road connects De Soto to Du Quoin (about 13 miles north) and Carbondale (about 6 miles south). Another important road, Illinois Route 149, crosses US-51 in De Soto. It leads to Murphysboro, the county seat, and Hurst.
The village covers an area of about 0.92 square miles (2.39 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. The Big Muddy River, which flows into the Mississippi River, is located to the east and south of De Soto.
A Look Back in Time: De Soto's History
De Soto was officially started in 1854. This happened when a railroad line was built to reach that area. The village was named after Hernando de Soto, a Spanish explorer. He explored parts of this region in the 1540s. A post office has been serving De Soto since 1855.
In 1925, De Soto was hit very hard by a massive storm called the Great Tri-State Tornado. This tornado caused a lot of damage and destroyed about 30% of the town. It was a very powerful storm that affected parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana.
