De Winton is a small community, known as a hamlet, located in southern Alberta, Canada. It's part of Foothills County. You can find it just south of the big city of Calgary and west of Highway 2A, also called MacLeod Trail.
De Winton is located within Census Division No. 6. Sometimes, people spell its name as Dewinton. This hamlet was named after Francis de Winton, who was a British army officer.
History
De Winton's Role in World War II
During the Second World War, De Winton played an important part. A special pilot training school was set up here. It was run by the Royal Air Force at the Royal Canadian Air Force air station. This place is now known as the De Winton/South Calgary Airport.
To help with the training, temporary buildings were built. These buildings housed the operations and provided living spaces for the service members.
