Dean Marshall is a Canadian actor, writer, and director who has appeared in movies, television shows, and plays. He is well-known for playing Sgt. Bates in the science-fiction series Stargate Atlantis. He also played the character Carter in the TV shows Da Vinci's Inquest and Da Vinci's City Hall.

From Music to the Military
Dean Marshall was born and raised in a suburb of Montreal, Canada. His family came to Canada from the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago before he was born. When he was young, Marshall discovered a love for performing and joined a steel band, which is a type of musical group that plays drums made from steel oil barrels.
Before becoming an actor, Marshall decided to serve his country. At age 18, he joined the Canadian Forces and was a soldier for about six years.

After his time in the military, Marshall began a new career in the entertainment world in 1993. He started acting, writing, and directing for television, movies, and theater. He has lived in Vancouver since his acting career began.
Marshall is known for playing a wide variety of characters. He played a brave and daring officer named Malcolm Bridges in the movie Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers. He also played the smart and calm Detective Carter in the TV series Da Vinci's City Hall.
