Deborah Eisenberg (born November 20, 1945) is an American writer, actress, and teacher. She is famous for her amazing short stories. Currently, she teaches writing at Columbia University.

Early Life

Deborah Eisenberg was born in Winnetka, Illinois. She grew up in the suburbs near Chicago. Later, in the late 1960s, she moved to New York City.

Her Career

In 1973, Deborah Eisenberg worked as an editorial assistant. This was at a magazine called The New York Review of Books. She taught at the University of Virginia from 1994 to 2011. After that, she started teaching at Columbia University's writing program.

Writing Stories and Plays

Eisenberg has written five collections of short stories. These include Transactions in a Foreign Currency (1986) and Under the 82nd Airborne (1992). Other collections are All Around Atlantis (1997), Twilight of the Superheroes (2006), and Your Duck Is My Duck (2018).

Many people think her writing is excellent. A reviewer from The New York Times Book Review called her "one of the most important fiction writers now." Another reviewer noted her great ear for dialogue. Her first two story collections were put together in one book. This book was called The Work (So Far) of Deborah Eisenberg (1997). Later, her first four collections were reprinted in The Collected Stories of Deborah Eisenberg (2010).

Eisenberg also wrote a play named Pastorale. It was shown in New York City in 1982. She has written for popular magazines. These include The New York Review of Books and The New Yorker. She also wrote the story for the 2020 film Let Them All Talk. For this movie, she wrote a 50-page outline. The actors then made up much of the dialogue themselves.

Awards and Honors

Deborah Eisenberg has won many awards for her writing. In 2000, she received the Rea Award for the Short Story. This award is given for important contributions to short stories. She also won a Whiting Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1987.

She has won six O. Henry Awards for her short stories. These were in 1986, 1995, 1997, 2002, 2006, and 2013. In 2007, she became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. This is a group that honors top artists. In 2009, she received a MacArthur Fellowship. This award is sometimes called a "genius grant." She won the 2011 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for The Collected Stories of Deborah Eisenberg.

In May 2015, Eisenberg received the PEN/Malamud Award. This award recognizes excellence in short story writing. Her book Your Duck Is My Duck was a finalist for The Story Prize in 2018.

Personal Life

Deborah Eisenberg lives in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. Her longtime partner is the actor and writer Wallace Shawn. She was mentioned often in the film My Dinner With Andre. She also appeared briefly in that movie.
