Deborah Eisenberg, born on November 20, 1945, is an American writer. She is known for her amazing short stories. She also teaches writing at Columbia University.

Early Life and Background

Eisenberg was born in Winnetka, Illinois. Her family is Jewish. She grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. In the late 1960s, she moved to New York City.

Deborah Eisenberg's Career

Eisenberg started her career in 1973. She worked as an editorial assistant at The New York Review of Books. Later, she became a teacher. She taught at the University of Virginia from 1994 to 2011. After that, she joined Columbia University's MFA writing program.

Her Published Stories

Deborah Eisenberg has written five collections of short stories. These books are:

  • Transactions in a Foreign Currency (1986)
  • Under the 82nd Airborne (1992)
  • All Around Atlantis (1997)
  • Twilight of the Superheroes (2006)
  • Your Duck Is My Duck (2018)

Many people think highly of her work. A reviewer from The New York Times Book Review called her "one of the most important fiction writers now at work." Another reviewer from The New York Times noted her great ear for dialogue.

Her first two story collections were put together in one book. It was called The Work (So Far) of Deborah Eisenberg (1997). Later, her first four collections were reprinted as The Collected Stories of Deborah Eisenberg (2010).

Other Creative Works

Besides stories, Eisenberg has also written a play. It is called Pastorale. This play was shown at Second Stage in New York City in 1982.

She has also written for popular magazines. These include The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, and The Yale Review. In 2020, she wrote a story for the film Let Them All Talk. The actors in the movie largely made up their own dialogue based on her story.

Awards and Honors

Deborah Eisenberg has received many awards for her writing.

  • In 2000, she won the Rea Award for the Short Story. This award is given for important contributions to short stories.
  • She also received a Whiting Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1987.
  • She has won six O. Henry Awards in different years: 1986, 1995, 1997, 2002, 2006, and 2013.

In 2007, Eisenberg became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2009, she received a MacArthur Fellowship. She won the 2011 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for her book The Collected Stories of Deborah Eisenberg. In May 2015, she received the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story. Her book Your Duck Is My Duck was a finalist for The Story Prize in 2018.

Personal Life

Eisenberg lives in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. Her longtime partner is the actor and writer Wallace Shawn. She was often called "Debbie" in the film My Dinner with Andre. She also appeared briefly in that movie.
