Decebal Traian Remeș (born June 26, 1949 – died February 14, 2020) was an important Romanian economist and politician. He was a member of the National Liberal Party (PNL). He served as a member of the Romanian Parliament for Maramureș County from 1996 to 2000.

Decebal Traian Remeș held two important government jobs. He was the Minister of Finance from 1998 to 2000. Later, he became the Minister of Agriculture in 2007.

Early Life and Education

Decebal Traian Remeș was born in Băsești, a town in Maramureș County, Romania. He studied economics at the University of Iași. He graduated in 1971.

Career Before Politics

After finishing university, Remeș worked as an economist at an electronics factory in Săcele until 1978. During some of these years, from 1973 to 1978, he also taught as an assistant professor at the University of Brașov.

From 1978 to 1980, he worked as an inspector for a company in his home county. Then, from 1980 to 1990, he was the chief accountant at a factory that made railway parts. After the Romanian Revolution in 1989, he became an economic director and then a director at a company in Baia Mare. From 1995 to 1996, he led a bank in the same city. He also wrote eleven articles about finance and accounting for an economics magazine.

Political Journey

Decebal Traian Remeș joined the National Liberal Party (PNL) in 1991. He quickly became a leader in the party's local branch in Maramureș County. He was vice president from 1992 to 1993 and then president from 1993 to 1996.

His first elected role was in local government. From 1992 to 1995, he served as vice president and then president of the Maramureș County Council.

Member of Parliament

In 1996, Remeș was elected to the Romanian Parliament. He represented Maramureș County. He served a four-year term, working on the budget, finance, and banking committee. He was the president of this committee from 1997 to 1998.

Minister of Finance

In September 1998, Decebal Traian Remeș was appointed Minister of Finance. He served in this role until December 2000. Return to Public Life

After 2000, Remeș returned to working in the private sector. He was an economic director for an agricultural company in Baia Mare from 2001 to 2007. He also led the PNL branch in Maramureș County during this period.

Minister of Agriculture

In April 2007, Decebal Traian Remeș was again called to serve in the government. He became the Minister of Agriculture. He held this position until October 2007.

During his time as Agriculture Minister, a video was shown on Romanian Television (TVR) that led to his resignation. He later stated that he was the victim of a political situation.
