The Deception River is a cool river found in New Zealand. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger one called the Otira River on the West Coast. The Deception River flows north for about 17 kilometers (11 miles). It starts high up on the side of Mount Franklin.

The river also flows near a place called Goat Pass, which leads to the Mingha River. Almost all of the Deception River is inside the beautiful Arthur's Pass National Park.

Why is it Called Deception River?

This river wasn't always called the Deception River. Long ago, it was known as "Goat Creek."

Around the year 1900, people were looking for a good path for the Midland Line railway. A surveyor, who was like a mapmaker, checked out the river. He warned that the water levels could be tricky and "deceiving."

Just a few months later, a big flood from the river rushed into the Otira Valley. This flood caused a lot of damage to the railway tracks. Because of this event, the river was given its current name: the Deception River.

Fun Activities on the Deception River

The Department of Conservation looks after a special walking path next to the river. This path is great for tramping, which is like hiking or long walks in nature.

The Deception River is also a key part of the yearly Coast to Coast race. This is a famous multi-sport event where athletes run, cycle, and kayak across New Zealand.

If you're out tramping, there are special huts where people can stay overnight. One hut is close to Goat Pass, and another is a bit further down the river. These huts offer a safe place to rest for adventurers exploring the area.
