Deep Foods is a company that makes delicious Indian foods. It is based in Union Township, Union County, New Jersey in the United States. They make many different kinds of food, especially frozen meals.

How Deep Foods Started

Deep Foods began in 1977. A woman named Bhagwati Amin loved to cook traditional foods from Gujarat, a state in India. Her neighbors and local grocery stores really liked her cooking.

Because so many people wanted her food, Bhagwati and her husband, Arvind, decided to start a company. They opened a factory in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. They named their new company Deep Foods after their son, Deepak.

In 1981, Arvind left his job as an accountant to help Bhagwati full-time. As more and more Indian Americans moved to the US, the demand for their products grew. Deep Foods became one of the biggest Indian food brands in the country. As of 2024, their products were sold in about 20,000 stores. Today, Bhagwati's son, Deepak, is the CEO of the company.

What Deep Foods Makes

The very first product Deep Foods made was called Hot Mix. This was a spicy Indian trail mix. It had fried noodles made from chickpea flour, mixed with cashews, pistachios, and spices.

Deep Foods is well-known for its frozen prepared Indian meals. They also make other interesting foods. For example, they produce frozen vegetarian naan pizzas. These pizzas are made entirely in India. The company also offers 14 different flavors of ice cream.

Around 2009, Deep Foods started a new line of frozen foods called Tandoor Chef. This line was created to appeal to people who might not be familiar with Indian food. Ten years later, in 2019, they changed the name of Tandoor Chef to Deep Indian Kitchen.

In 2012, the company received a special certification called Halal for its frozen chicken and lamb products. This means the products are prepared according to Islamic law. In 2021, their chicken vindaloo meal was even named "Best Frozen Dinner" by People magazine!

Deep Indian Kitchen Restaurants

In 2015, Deep Foods opened a chain of fast-casual restaurants in New York City. "Fast-casual" means you can get your food quickly, but it's usually higher quality than fast food. These restaurants let customers choose their ingredients, similar to how you might order at a Chipotle restaurant.

The restaurants were first called Indikitch. In 2019, they were also rebranded to Deep Indian Kitchen, just like the frozen food line. In 2020, they opened another restaurant location in Union, New Jersey.
