Deer Isle is a beautiful island located in Hancock County, Maine, United States. It's found on the eastern side of Penobscot Bay. Two main communities call this island home: Deer Isle and Stonington. You can reach Deer Isle by car from the Maine mainland. The only road connection is State Route 15, which crosses the Deer Isle Bridge.

Exploring Deer Isle's Geography

Deer Isle is a large island with a mix of land and water. The town of Deer Isle covers about 29.72 square miles (76.97 km2) of land. It also includes a lot of water, about 93.95 square miles (243.33 km2). This town is separated from the mainland by a waterway called Eggemoggin Reach. You can drive to Deer Isle using the Deer Isle Bridge, which connects it to the mainland. The town of Deer Isle also includes other nearby islands, like Little Deer Isle.

The town of Stonington is located at the southern end of Deer Isle. It covers about 9.81 square miles (25.41 km2) of land and 28.03 square miles (72.60 km2) of water. Stonington is right on Penobscot Bay and the Gulf of Maine, which are part of the huge Atlantic Ocean. State Route 15 ends in Stonington. This road travels through the town of Deer Isle and then over the Deer Isle Bridge to the mainland.
