Deer Lodge is a small community in Morgan County, Tennessee, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own city government.
Deer Lodge is located about 5.8 miles (9.3 km) west-southwest of Sunbright. It has its own post office with the ZIP code 37726, which started on April 16, 1886. The community was first created as a health resort in the 1880s by a person named Abner Ross. He came from a nearby settlement called Rugby.
History of Deer Lodge
Deer Lodge began on a piece of land that was about 300 acres (120 hectares). The Davidson family bought this land in the early 1800s. In 1845, James Davidson built a grist mill and a saw mill there. A grist mill grinds grain into flour, and a saw mill cuts logs into lumber.
Later, in 1876, Peter Fox bought the land. He tried to start a sheep ranch, but it didn't work out.
In 1884, Fox sold the land to Abner Ross. Ross had managed a hotel in Rugby called the Tabard Inn. He decided to turn the land into a mountain resort where people could relax and get healthy. He built a beautiful Victorian-style house called Walnut Knoll. Soon, other people built similar houses.
Ross also built a printer works, which is a place where things are printed. This building was later moved to Rugby. By the end of the 1890s, Deer Lodge was a busy place. It had two hotels, a newspaper called the Southern Enterprise, a theater, a band, and a planing mill (which smooths wood). There were also many clubs and groups for people to join.
However, by the middle of the 20th century, Deer Lodge became much smaller. Many of the children and grandchildren of the first settlers moved away. In 1930, only 155 people lived in Deer Lodge.
