History of Dehradun Airport
Dehradun Airport was built in 1974. For many years, smaller airlines like Vayudoot offered flights from here. They flew to cities like New Delhi and Lucknow.
In 2004, Air Deccan started new flights to New Delhi. But in 2007, the airport closed for a big upgrade. The Airports Authority of India wanted to make it better. They made the runway longer and wider. This allowed bigger planes, like the Boeing 737 and Airbus 320, to land. They also added a system for planes to land at night. A new terminal building and control tower were also built.
The upgrade cost about ₹720 million (around $9 million USD). It took a bit longer than planned. Flights started again in March 2008. Since then, more airlines like Air India and SpiceJet have started flying to Dehradun.
The Airport Buildings
The airport has a modern terminal building. It is made of glass and steel. The building has air conditioning and heating. It also has screens to show flight information and security cameras.
Old Terminal Features
The old domestic terminal was 4,200 square meters in size. It could handle 150 passengers during busy times. Each year, it could serve about 122,000 passengers. It had 11 check-in counters and X-ray machines for bags. There were also security checkpoints and baggage claim belts. The area where planes park could hold two medium-sized aircraft.
New Terminal Building
To handle more and more passengers, Dehradun Airport got a big makeover. The project cost about ₹353 crores (around $42 million USD). The first part of the plan was to build a brand new terminal. This new building is much larger, covering 42,776 square meters.
The new terminal can handle about 1,800 passengers during busy hours. This means the airport's capacity is now eight times bigger! It has a large area for passengers, check-in counters, and security. There are 36 check-in counters and self-check-in kiosks. It also has four aerobridges, which are walkways that connect the terminal directly to the plane. The new terminal was finished and opened on October 7, 2021.
