Del Rio is a community in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. It is not a city with its own government. Instead, it is an "unincorporated community." This means it is governed by the county.
Del Rio is located between the cities of Tampa and Temple Terrace. The Hillsborough River is also very close by. People who live in Del Rio sometimes call it "The Fishbowl." This is because many of the streets in the area are named after different kinds of fish! Del Rio is also part of a larger area called East Lake-Orient Park. This area is a "census-designated place," which is a special area the government uses to collect information about how many people live there.
Where is Del Rio?
Del Rio is surrounded by other places. To its west is the city of Tampa. The Hillsborough River forms its northern border. To the south, you'll find U.S. Route 92, which is a major road. On the east side, the community is bordered by 56th Street, also known as SR 583.
A Look at Del Rio's History
Del Rio was not always here. It was built in the 1950s and 1960s. At that time, many people were moving to Florida. Del Rio became one of the new neighborhoods, or "suburbs," around Tampa.
The community grew quickly during the 1960s and 1970s. More and more families moved in. The number of people living in Del Rio reached its highest point in 1990. At that time, about 8,248 people lived there, according to the U.S. Census.
