The Delaplane Historic District is a special area in Delaplane, Virginia, within Fauquier County, Virginia. It's known for its important old buildings and places that tell stories from the past. This district is officially recognized as a historic district because it helps us remember and understand history. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
Discovering Delaplane's Past
Delaplane started as a small village in 1852. It grew around the Piedmont Station, a stop on the new Manassas Gap Railroad. This railroad was built to connect different towns in Virginia. The railroad built a station, a warehouse, and a store. Soon, a town began to grow around these buildings.
In 1874, the town's name was changed. It was named after Washington E. Delaplane. He was the local postmaster and owned the general store. The area around Delaplane saw a lot of activity during the American Civil War. Troops moved through the town, and famous groups like Mosby's Rangers were active here.
Today, the Delaplane Historic District still looks much like it did in 1861. The surrounding area is part of the Commonwealth of Virginia's Mosby Heritage Area. This area helps people learn about the history, nature, and culture of Northern Virginia.
Exploring Historic Buildings
The Delaplane Historic District includes 24 important buildings and 3 historic sites. Many of these homes and businesses date back to the mid-1800s. Others were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Some of the notable buildings include:
- Two-story brick buildings from 1852. These were used as stores, stations, and warehouses. They show a style called Greek Revival.
- Roger's Depot, an old train station.
- The Delaplane House, built around 1852.
- The old Shacklett's Mill, built around 1910.
- The old Delaplane Store, which now houses the post office.
- The McDonald House.
The Westminster Presbyterian Church, now a home, is also in this district. Two other historic churches are just outside the district's limits. These are Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Delaplane) (founded 1850) and Pleasant Vale Baptist Church (built 1845).
