Dellwood is a small place in Coos County, Oregon, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government.

Dellwood is located about 12 miles (19 km) east of a bigger city called Coos Bay. You can find it just east of Oregon Route 241, right on the South Fork Coos River.

A Bit of History

Dellwood wasn't always called Dellwood! When it was first settled, people called it Idlewood. But in 1940, when a post office was going to open there, postal officials said no to the name. This was because it sounded too much like another place in Oregon called Idleyld, which is in Douglas County.

To avoid confusion, a new name was needed. From several ideas, "Dellwood" was chosen. It was picked because it sounded similar to the old name, Idlewood. The post office in Dellwood stayed open for about 14 years before it closed in 1954.

Working with Wood

For a long time, Dellwood was an important spot for the timber industry. It was home to a large Weyerhaeuser log yard. A log yard is a place where cut trees, called logs, are brought and stored.

Dellwood was also once a "log dump." This means it was a place where logs were put into the South Fork Coos River. From there, they would float downriver in big groups, called log rafts, all the way to Coos Bay. These logs were then prepared for export to other places.

Weyerhaeuser also had a sawmill in Dellwood. A sawmill is a factory where logs are cut into lumber, which is used for building and other things. However, this sawmill closed down in 1991.

Today, if you want to go hunting or fishing in the South Fork Coos River above Dellwood, you need to get permission from Weyerhaeuser. They manage access to that part of the river for recreational activities.
