Delmar is a small community called a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem. It is located in Albany County, New York, in the United States. Delmar is like a suburb, meaning it's a residential area near the larger city of Albany. A main road called NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue) runs right through the middle of Delmar, connecting it to Albany.

The U.S. Census Bureau once defined Delmar as a special area for counting people, called a census-designated place (CDP). In 2000, about 8,292 people lived there. However, it was not counted as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine said that the Delmar ZIP Code area was one of the "Best Places to Live" in America. It was ranked as the 22nd best place to live among "Great American Towns."

History of Delmar: How it Got its Name

The story of Delmar began in 1836 when a man named Nathaniel Adams moved to the area. Two years later, he built a big hotel and made other improvements to the community.

When the first post office opened in 1840, Nathaniel Adams became its first postmaster. His hotel even served as Bethlehem's Town Hall for many years, from 1950 to 1980.

In 1841, Nathaniel Adams gave one acre of his land to build a chapel. This meant people of the Dutch Reformed Church didn't have to travel far to worship. Because of Nathaniel Adams's contributions, the area was first known as Adamsville.

After Adamsville got its post office, mail sometimes got mixed up with another town in New York also named Adams. To fix this, the post office name was changed to Adams Station.

However, the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad, which had a train station in the area, decided to call its station Delmar instead of Adamsville. In 1892, local residents asked for the post office name to be changed to match the train station. This request was accepted, and that's how Adams Station became Delmar.
