Delta Cafés is a well-known company from Portugal. It specializes in roasting and packaging coffee. The company's main office is in Campo Maior, a town in the Alentejo region.
This company began in 1961. Today, it is one of the biggest coffee companies in the Iberian Peninsula, which includes Portugal and Spain. Delta Cafés was founded by Rui Nabeiro (1931-2023). His group of companies also includes businesses in farming, real estate, and hotels.
How Delta Cafés Started
Delta Cafés was founded by Rui Nabeiro in 1961. It started in the town of Campo Maior, in Alentejo. The first place was a very small warehouse, only about 50 square meters (538 square feet).
It had just two coffee roasters and only three workers. This was the humble beginning of a big company.
Growing into a Leader
By 1994, Delta Cafés had become the top coffee company in Portugal. It held 42% of the market share, meaning nearly half of all coffee sold in Portugal was Delta's.
In 1998, the Nabeiro/Delta Cafés Group changed its structure. It became 22 different companies, all working together. This helped the group grow even more.
New Products and Partnerships
In the 2000s, Delta Cafés continued to be the leading coffee company in Portugal. Its market share was about 38%. The company serves 47,000 direct customers, including large stores like Sonae. It also employs 3,000 people.
In 2007, Delta Cafés launched a new product called Delta Q. These were special coffee capsules and machines. They made it easy to brew espresso at home, similar to other popular capsule systems.
Later, in October 2017, Delta Cafés teamed up with Alibaba, a big online shopping platform. This helped them sell their coffee to more people around the world. In July 2018, Delta also joined the International Coffee Partners (ICP). This is an international group that works to improve the coffee industry.
