How It All Began
Delta Cafés was started by Rui Nabeiro in 1961. He began his business in Campo Maior, Portugal. It was a very small start. His first warehouse was only about 50 square meters. It had space for just two coffee roasting machines. Only three people worked there at the beginning.
Growing Bigger
By 1994, Delta Cafés became the top coffee company in Portugal. It had a 42% share of the market. This means almost half of all coffee sold in Portugal was from Delta. In 1998, the company grew even more. It was reorganized into 22 different companies. These companies worked in various business areas. Together, they made about €160 million (Euros) in sales.
Leading the Market
In the 2000s, Delta Cafés continued to be the leader in Portugal's coffee market. Its market share was 38%. The company serves many customers directly. It has about 47,000 business clients. One of its biggest clients is Sonae, a large store chain in Portugal. Delta Cafés also employs around 3,000 people.
New Coffee Products
In 2007, Delta Cafés launched a new product line called Delta Q. These were special espresso products. They used single-serving "capsules" filled with ground coffee. There were also special machines to brew the coffee from these capsules. This system was similar to the Nespresso brand.
Partnerships and Global Reach
Delta Cafés has also made important partnerships. In October 2017, they teamed up with Alibaba. Alibaba is a very big online shopping platform. In July 2018, Delta Cafés joined the International Coffee Partners (ICP). This is a group of coffee companies from around the world.
