She has said that her younger half-sister, Franje, was a big inspiration in her life. Franje was born with a rare condition called cerebellar agenesis and passed away in 2019 at the age of 13.

Her Journey in Pageants
Winning Miss South Africa 2017
Nel-Peters began her pageant journey by representing the Western Cape province. On 26 March 2017, she competed in and won the Miss South Africa 2017 pageant.
As Miss South Africa, she was chosen to represent her country at Miss Universe 2017. She traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the international competition.
Becoming Miss Universe 2017
During the final part of the Miss Universe competition, host Steve Harvey asked Nel-Peters what quality she was most proud of. She answered that being confident is very important. She said a Miss Universe is a woman who has overcome her fears and can help other women do the same.
She also spoke about equal pay for women. She said, "I think we should have equal work for equal pay for women all over the world."
Her smart and confident answers helped her win the crown. The previous Miss Universe, Iris Mittenaere of France, crowned her as the new winner.
Using Her Title to Help Others
A month after becoming Miss South Africa, Nel-Peters was involved in a dangerous situation where people tried to take her car. She used self-defense skills to escape safely. Because of this experience, she decided to use her role as Miss Universe to teach self-defense workshops. She wanted to help as many women as possible feel safer.
As Miss Universe, she traveled the world. She visited many countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, France, Mexico, India, and Egypt. She also returned to her home country of South Africa to do charity work.
Her time as Miss Universe ended on 17 December 2018. At a ceremony in Bangkok, Thailand, she crowned her successor, Catriona Gray of the Philippines.
