Demi-Leigh Tebow (born Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters on 28 June 1995) is a famous model and beauty queen from South Africa. She won the title of Miss Universe 2017. Before that, she was crowned Miss South Africa 2017. She is the second person from South Africa to win Miss Universe. The first was Margaret Gardiner in Miss Universe 1978.

About Demi-Leigh's Early Life and School

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was born in Sedgefield, Western Cape, South Africa. Her parents are Bennie Peters and Anne-Marie Steenkamp. Demi-Leigh had a half-sister named Franje. Franje was born with a condition that affected her brain. Demi-Leigh said Franje was her biggest inspiration. Sadly, Franje passed away when she was 13 years old in 2019.

Demi-Leigh finished her studies at North-West University in March 2017. This was just a few days before she won the Miss South Africa 2017 competition. She can speak two languages very well: English and Afrikaans.

Before winning Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh also won Miss Varsity Cup in 2015. She was also a Top 5 finalist in Miss Teen SA in 2010.

Demi-Leigh's Pageant Journey

Becoming Miss South Africa 2017

Demi-Leigh represented the Western Cape province in the Miss South Africa 2017 competition. She won the title on 26 March 2017. As Miss South Africa, she could have gone to both Miss World 2017 and Miss Universe 2017. However, because the dates for these two big pageants were at the same time, she only went to Miss Universe. This competition was held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Winning Miss Universe 2017

During the final round of Miss Universe 2017, the host, Steve Harvey, asked Demi-Leigh an important question. He asked what quality she was most proud of. He also asked how she would use that quality as Miss Universe.

Demi-Leigh answered that a Miss Universe must be confident in herself. She said Miss Universe is a woman who has overcome many fears. Because of this, she can help other women to overcome their own fears. She also said that nothing is too much to ask for from a Miss Universe. Demi-Leigh felt this described her perfectly.

She was also asked about an important issue for women at work. Demi-Leigh spoke about equal pay. She said that in some places, women are paid less than men for doing the same job. They work the same hours but earn only 75% of what men earn. She strongly believed this was not fair. She said that women everywhere should get equal pay for equal work.

Demi-Leigh won the competition and was crowned Miss Universe 2017. The previous Miss Universe, Iris Mittenaere, placed the crown on her head. Demi-Leigh is the second person from South Africa to win this title. The first was Margaret Gardiner, who won Miss Universe 1978.

Helping Women with Self-Defence

Demi-Leigh shared during Miss Universe that she wanted to help women learn self-defence. She wanted to hold workshops to teach as many women as possible. This idea came from a scary event that happened to her. About a month after she became Miss South Africa, she was carjacked in Hyde Park. She gave the carjackers her car keys. But they forced her into her car. She bravely punched one of them in the throat. This allowed her to run away and get help.

Demi-Leigh's Travels as Miss Universe

As Miss Universe, Demi-Leigh travelled to many countries. She visited the Philippines and Indonesia twice. She also went to Thailand twice. Other countries she visited included France, Mexico (twice), Ecuador, India, Lebanon, Egypt, and Malaysia. She also visited many cities in the United States. Of course, she also spent time in her home country, South Africa.

Demi-Leigh's time as Miss Universe ended on 17 December 2018. The event was held in Bangkok, Thailand. She crowned Catriona Gray from the Philippines as the new Miss Universe.

Demi-Leigh's Personal Life

While she was Miss Universe 2017, Demi-Leigh started dating Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow is a famous former professional American football player. He also played professional baseball for a short time.

Demi-Leigh and Tim Tebow got engaged on 9 January 2019. This happened at Tim's family farm in Jacksonville, Florida. They got married on 20 January 2020. Their wedding was in Franschhoek, Western Cape, which is near Cape Town. Like Tim Tebow, Demi-Leigh is a Christian.
