The Demondrille railway station was a very important train station in Murrumburrah, New South Wales, Australia. It is located where two major railway lines met: the Main South line and a branch line that went to Cowra and Blayney.
This station was special because it was a "junction." This means it was a place where train tracks split off in different directions. It had two main platforms, one for each line. There were also two signal boxes to control the trains safely. The station opened in 1885 and closed in 1974. Even though the platforms are gone, the railway area is still considered a special heritage site in New South Wales.
Train Service Area
For many years, especially when steam trains were common, Demondrille station was a key place for servicing locomotives. Imagine a pit stop for trains!
What happened there?
Trains could pull off the main track and get everything they needed without having to unhook their carriages. This saved a lot of time.
- Coal: Steam trains needed a lot of coal to make them run. Demondrille had a special "coal stage" where trains could quickly get more fuel.
- Ash Removal: Burning coal creates ash. This ash had to be cleaned out regularly from the train's engine.
- Water: Steam trains also needed a lot of water to create the steam that powered them. They could fill up their water tanks here.
When was it used?
This service area started working between March and June 1923. It was made even better in 1945 so it could handle passenger trains more easily. The coal stage stopped being used after the last steam-powered passenger train left on 20 June 1964. The remaining coal was removed a few days later.
