Demotina is a group of small insects called leaf beetles. They belong to a larger family of beetles known as Eumolpinae. Think of a genus as a family name for different types of beetles that are very similar.
There are more than 50 different kinds, or "species," of Demotina beetles. Most of these beetles live in Asia, Australia, and the islands of Oceania. However, one type, called Demotina modesta, has traveled and now lives in the southeastern United States in North America. When a species moves to a new place and starts living there, it's called an adventive species.
Some Demotina beetles are special because they can reproduce without a male. This is called parthenogenesis. It means the female beetle can lay eggs that hatch into new beetles all by herself!
