Deng Chao (simplified Chinese: 邓超; traditional Chinese: 鄧超; pinyin: Dèng Chāo, born on February 8, 1979) is a famous Chinese actor and director. He is known for his roles in many popular movies and TV shows. Deng Chao has also directed several successful films.
He gained fame from TV series like The Young Emperor (2003) and Happiness as Flowers (2005). Later, he became a big movie star. Some of his well-known films include Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) and The Mermaid (2016).
Deng Chao also directed and starred in movies such as The Breakup Guru (2014) and Looking Up (2019). From 2014 to 2019, he was a popular cast member on the variety show Keep Running. Since 2020, he has been part of the web show HAHAHAHAHA.

Early Life
Deng Chao was born in Nanchang, Jiangxi, China, on February 8, 1979. His father worked as a museum secretary, and his mother was a factory manager. Deng Chao was the youngest child in his family.
In 1995, he began studying theater at the Jiangxi Vocational Academy of Art. After three years, he moved to Beijing. In 1998, he joined the Central Academy of Drama to continue his acting studies.
Career Highlights
Starting Out
While studying at the Central Academy of Drama, Deng Chao performed in several stage plays. These performances helped him get noticed. After finishing his studies, he started acting in TV dramas.
He became famous with the historical TV series The Young Emperor in 2003. He gained even more recognition from the military drama Happiness as Flowers, directed by Gao Xixi.
Becoming Well-Known
Deng Chao's popularity grew quickly. He got a role in Feng Xiaogang's war film Assembly. This movie was very popular and received great reviews. Deng Chao won the Best Supporting Actor award at the Hundred Flowers Awards for his role. This helped him become a successful movie actor.
In 2010, he starred in Tsui Hark's action-mystery film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame. He played a unique detective named Bei Dong Lai. This role earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards. He also appeared in the fantasy film Mural (2011).
Directing and Variety Shows
In 2013, Deng Chao was one of the main actors in Peter Chan's film American Dreams in China. The movie was about three friends who started a successful English teaching school. It was a big hit and received good reviews.
Deng Chao made his first movie as a director with The Breakup Guru (2014). This romantic comedy also starred him alongside Yang Mi. The film was very successful and became one of the highest-grossing movies in China that year.
In the same year, he joined the popular variety show Keep Running. This show was a Chinese version of the South Korean program Running Man. Keep Running became extremely popular in China.
Deng Chao then starred in the crime film The Dead End (2015). Critics praised his performance in the movie. He won the Best Actor award at the 18th Shanghai International Film Festival. He also won another Best Actor trophy at the Golden Rooster Awards for this role.
Continued Success
In 2016, Deng Chao starred in The Mermaid, a film directed by Stephen Chow. This movie broke many box office records. It had the biggest opening day and the highest single-day earnings for a Chinese film at the time. Because of his success, a magazine called CBN Weekly named him one of the most valuable celebrities in China.
In 2017, he appeared in Han Han's film Duckweed. He played a rebellious car racer who felt misunderstood by his parents. In 2018, Deng Chao starred in Zhang Yimou's historical film, Shadow.
In 2019, Deng Chao co-directed and starred in the family drama film Looking Up.
Personal Life
Deng Chao married actress Sun Li in 2010. They have two children together. Their son is named Deng Han Zhi, and their daughter is named Deng Han Yi.
