Deng Chao (born February 8, 1979) is a famous Chinese actor and director. He became well-known for his roles in TV shows like The Young Emperor (2003) and Happiness as Flowers (2005). Later, he started acting in movies. Some of his popular films include Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010), American Dreams in China (2013), and The Mermaid (2016). He won the Golden Rooster Award for Best Actor for his role in The Dead End (2015).
Deng Chao has also directed and starred in movies such as The Breakup Guru (2014) and Looking Up (2019). From 2014 to 2019, he was a popular cast member of the variety show Keep Running. Since 2020, he has been part of the web show HAHAHAHAHA.

Early Life and Education
Deng Chao was born on February 8, 1979, in Nanchang, Jiangxi, China. He grew up in a family with stepsiblings. His father worked as a museum secretary, and his mother was a factory manager.
In 1995, Deng Chao began studying theater at the Jiangxi Vocational Academy of Art for three years. After that, in 1998, he moved to Beijing to attend the Central Academy of Drama, a well-known acting school.
Career Highlights
Starting Out in Acting
While still in college, Deng Chao got a role in a popular play called Cuihua Shang Suancai. This play helped him meet Yu Baimei, who would become his long-time creative partner. After graduating, he started acting in TV dramas.
He became famous with the historical drama The Young Emperor in 2003. His popularity grew even more with the military romance drama Happiness as Flowers, where he starred alongside Sun Li.
Gaining More Recognition
As Deng Chao became more popular, he got a role in Feng Xiaogang's war film Assembly in 2007. His performance in this movie helped him win the Best Supporting Actor award at the Hundred Flowers Awards. This marked his successful move into big-screen movies.
In 2010, he starred in Tsui Hark's action-mystery film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame. He played a unique albino detective named Bei Donglai and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards. In 2013, Deng Chao was one of the main actors in Peter Chan's film American Dreams in China. This movie was about three friends who became successful by starting an English teaching school. It was a big hit and received good reviews.
Deng Chao made his first movie as a director with The Breakup Guru (2014). This romantic comedy, which he co-created with Yu Baimei, was very successful at the box office in China. In 2017, he appeared in Duckweed, playing a rebellious car racer. He also starred in the crime film The Liquidator. In 2018, he was in Zhang Yimou's historical film Shadow.
In 2019, Deng Chao co-directed and starred in the family drama film Looking Up. In 2020, he was part of the film My People, My Homeland and participated in a special gala. In 2021, he was a mentor on the show CHUANG 2021 and hosted the Golden Rooster Awards ceremony. He also performed at the China Media Group Spring Festival Gala in 2022 and 2023.
Personal Life
Deng Chao is married to actress Sun Li. They got married in 2010 and have two children, a son and a daughter.
In 2014, he launched his Sina Weibo account, which is a popular social media platform in China. In 2015, Madame Tussauds created a wax figure of Deng Chao, which is displayed in their museums in Beijing and Wuhan.
