Becoming a Judge: Denise Page Hood's Journey
Early Life and Education
Denise Page Hood was born in Columbus, Ohio. She worked hard in school and went to Yale University. In 1974, she earned her first degree there. Later, she studied law at Columbia Law School, getting her law degree in 1977.
Starting Her Legal Career
After finishing law school, Denise Page Hood began her career in Detroit, Michigan. From 1977 to 1982, she worked for the city's Law Department. She helped the city with its legal matters.
Serving as a State Judge
Before becoming a federal judge, she served in several important roles in Michigan's state courts:
- From 1983 to 1989, she was a judge in the 36th District Court of Michigan.
- From 1989 to 1992, she served on the Recorder's Court for the City of Detroit.
- From 1993 to 1994, she was a judge on the Michigan Circuit Court for Wayne County.
Her Work as a Federal Judge
Joining the Federal Court
On March 9, 1994, President Bill Clinton chose Denise Page Hood to become a federal judge. She was nominated to a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The United States Senate approved her on June 15, 1994. She officially started her new role as a judge on June 16, 1994.
Becoming Chief Judge
Judge Hood continued to serve the court for many years. On December 31, 2015, she became the Chief Judge of the court. This is a very important leadership role. She was the Chief Judge until February 15, 2022.
Senior Status
On May 1, 2022, Judge Hood took on a new role called "senior status". This means she can still hear cases and help the court, but she has a lighter workload. It allows experienced judges to continue serving without the full demands of a regular active judge.
