Dennis Hadley Currie (born July 22, 1874 – died March 26, 1928) was an important officer in the United States Army. He spent most of his career working with artillery, which are big guns used in warfare. He served in many places across the United States and also during a time when the U.S. military was in Veracruz, Mexico, in 1914.

Growing Up and School

Dennis Currie was born on July 22, 1874, in Glen Rose, Texas. He went to Glen Rose High School and then a small college nearby.

In 1901, he graduated from the United States Military Academy, often called West Point. This is a famous school for training army officers. He also studied at other important army schools. These included the Infantry and Cavalry School in 1907 and the Army Staff College in 1908. Both of these schools were at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Army Career

After finishing West Point, Dennis Currie became a second lieutenant in the Artillery Corps in 1901. This group later became known as the Field Artillery. He moved up in rank, becoming a first lieutenant in 1905 and a captain in 1911.

Currie spent most of his time in the army working with artillery. From 1908 to 1917, he was stationed at many different army bases. These included Fort Sheridan in Illinois and Fort Sam Houston in Texas. He also served at Fort Sill in Oklahoma and the Schofield Barracks in Hawaii.

Between 1911 and 1912, Currie worked as an inspector and instructor for the Militia. This involved traveling to Colorado, Utah, California, and Oregon. On December 23, 1913, he joined the Signal Corps. He was a commander in this group from 1914 to 1915. During this time, he served in Texas City, Texas and Vera Cruz, Mexico.

Later, on October 3, 1917, Currie joined the General Staff. He worked in Washington, D.C., and France. On May 15, 1918, he was promoted to colonel of field artillery. Just a few months later, on October 1, 1918, he became a brigadier general.

Currie retired from the army on December 31, 1922, due to a health issue. Near the end of his career, he returned to Fort Sill. There, he was in charge of the United States Army Field Artillery School. He also helped to set up and start this important school.

Family and Later Life

Dennis Currie was married and had two children. His son was named William Ross Currie, and his daughter was Annie Virginia Currie.

He had a health problem throughout his life. This illness caused him to graduate a bit later from West Point. It also led to his early retirement from the army. Sadly, this illness also contributed to his death at age 53. He passed away in Piedmont, California, on March 26, 1928. He was buried at the San Francisco National Cemetery.
