History of Dennison
Dennison grew because of its coal and railroads. It is located exactly halfway between Pittsburgh and Columbus. Both cities are about 100 miles (161 km) away.
Back then, train engines needed water every 100 miles (161 km). This made Dennison a perfect spot for trains to stop and refill. Also, the Dennison Coal Company had coal mines south of the town.
Railroads and Growth
In 1864, a company called The Pittsburgh, Cincinnati & St. Louis Railway decided to build the country's biggest railroad shops and yards in Dennison. The Dennison Land Company created the town of Dennison in 1865. They bought land just for the town.
The train yards were huge, covering about 40 acres (16 hectares). As more people traveled by train, a train station was built in 1873. Thousands of people moved to Dennison for jobs. They worked in places like the roundhouses, where trains were turned around, and foundries, where metal was made. At its busiest time, 3,000 people worked in the train yards. Later, The Pennsylvania Railroad Company took over the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati & St. Louis Railway.
The village officially became a town in 1873. It was named after William Dennison, who was the governor of Ohio.
Red Cross Canteens
During World War I, the Red Cross helped soldiers passing through Dennison. Volunteers ran a canteen from a train car. They made coffee and sandwiches for the troops.
In 1922, a big strike happened, marking the end of Dennison's best years. During World War II, the Dennison Canteen opened again. It operated from March 19, 1942, to April 8, 1946. It started in a gas station but later moved to the train station's restaurant. People called it "Dreamsville."
The last train carrying passengers stopped in Dennison in 1968. The last freight train that stopped there was in 1982. Today, freight trains still pass through Dennison, but they no longer stop.
