Dennisville has an interesting past, dating back hundreds of years.
When Was Dennisville Founded?
Dennisville was first settled in 1726 by a person named Anthony Ludlam. The first post office in the area opened on September 7, 1802. It was originally called Dennis Creek Post Office. Jeremiah Johnson was the first postmaster. The name was officially changed to Dennisville in 1854.
The Amazing Cedar Tree Industry
In the 1880s, a very unique industry grew in Dennisville. People discovered that many cedar trees had fallen into local swamps. These trees had been there for decades, even centuries! They were huge, about 4 to 6 feet wide.
These hidden trees were first found in 1812. Soon, recovering them became a big business. The wood was used to make shingles for roofs and staves for barrels. This industry brought a lot of economic growth to the area.
