Deportivo Wanka is a Peruvian football club. It is based in the city of Huancayo in the Andes mountains of Peru. The club was started in 1969. It is named after the Wankas people, who used to live in that area. The city of Huancayo is also named after them.

Today, Deportivo Wanka has joined with another club called Deportivo Pesquero from Chimbote. But Huancayo is still considered its home city. The team plays its home games at Estadio Huancayo. Their last time playing in Peru's top football league, the First Division, was in 2004.

Club History

Early Days as Deportivo Sipesa

The club first started in 1969 as Club Ovacion Miraflores in Chimbote. Later, its name changed to Ovación Sipesa. The team played in the top league of Chimbote. They got help and money from a fishing company called Sipesa. In 1992, they moved up to Peru's First Division. The next year, in 1993, they even played in an international tournament called the Copa CONMEBOL.

Becoming Deportivo Pesquero

In 1996, the Sipesa company stopped supporting the club. Because of this, the club changed its name to Deportivo Pesquero.

The Birth of Deportivo Wanka

In the year 2000, Deportivo Pesquero and a club called Deportivo Wanka joined together. This merger allowed the city of Huancayo to have a team in the Primera División Peruana, Peru's highest football league.

In 2004, the team caused some talk when it moved its home base to Cerro de Pasco. This city is known as one of the highest cities in the world. It is about 4,380 meters (13,973 feet) above sea level. This is a very high place to play professional football! Playing there can be very hard because of the thin air, which can cause altitude sickness. Other teams found it very difficult to play in these conditions, which included hail, rain, and cold temperatures. Despite playing in such a challenging location, the club was moved down from the top league that season.
