Deportivo Wanka is a Peruvian football (soccer) club. It is based in the city of Huancayo, which is located in the Andes mountains of Peru. The club was started in 1969. Its name comes from the Huanca people, an ancient group who lived in the area. The city of Huancayo is also named after them.
Today, Deportivo Wanka has joined with another club called Deportivo Pesquero from Chimbote. However, Huancayo is still considered their home city. They play their games at Estadio Huancayo. The last time they played in Peru's top football league, the Primera División Peruana, was in 2004. After that season, they were moved down to a lower league. They protested this decision and were not allowed to play in any football tournaments for a while.

Club History: From Sipesa to Wanka
Early Days as Deportivo Sipesa
The club first started in 1969 in Chimbote as Club Ovacion Miraflores. Later, it became known as Ovación Sipesa. This team played in the top division of Chimbote. They received money and support from a fishing company union called Sipesa. In 1992, they moved up to the Primera División Peruana, which is Peru's highest football league. The next year, in 1993, they even played in an international tournament called the Copa CONMEBOL.
Becoming Deportivo Pesquero
In 1996, the fishing union stopped supporting the club. Because of this, the team changed its name to Deportivo Pesquero.
The Birth of Deportivo Wanka
In the year 2000, Deportivo Pesquero and a club from Huancayo called Deportivo Wanka decided to merge. This merger allowed the city of Huancayo to have a team in the Primera División Peruana.
Playing at High Altitude
In 2004, Deportivo Wanka caused a lot of discussion. The team moved its home base to Cerro de Pasco. This city is known as one of the highest cities in the world. It is also one of the highest places where professional football is played. The stadium is located about 4,380 meters (13,973 feet) above sea level. This is very high, and many people can get altitude sickness there.
Other teams complained about this move. They thought Deportivo Wanka was trying to avoid being moved to a lower league. Playing in such high conditions was very difficult for visiting teams. They had to deal with hail, rain, cold temperatures, and less oxygen. Even with this advantage, the club was still moved down to a lower league that season.
