Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Depth is a way to describe how far something goes from its front to its back, or from its top to its bottom. Think of it as measuring how "deep" something is!

For example, if you look at a box, its depth is the distance from the side closest to you to the side farthest away. Or, if you're looking at a swimming pool, its depth is the distance from the surface of the water down to the very bottom.

Understanding Depth for Objects

When we talk about the depth of an object, like a book, a cupboard, or a room, we are measuring the distance from its front surface to its back surface. It's one of the three main measurements we use to describe how big something is in space.

Imagine you have a toy car. If you measure it from its front bumper to its back bumper, you are measuring its depth. This helps us understand how much space an object takes up, especially when we think about putting it inside something else, like a shelf or a box.

Understanding Depth for Liquids

For liquids, like water in a glass or a lake, depth means the distance from the very top surface of the liquid down to the bottom of the container or the ground underneath.

If you fill a bathtub with water, the distance from the water's surface to the bottom of the tub is the water's depth. If this distance is large, we say the water is deep. This is important for things like swimming, boating, or even knowing how much water is in a well.
