What Were the Derienni?
The Derienni were known for robbing gold trains. These trains carried sacks of California gold across the Isthmus of Panama. The Isthmus is a narrow strip of land connecting North and South America. After robbing the gold, the bandits would quickly disappear into the nearby hills.
Why Were They a Problem?
These highwaymen caused a lot of trouble for the gold transporters. Their constant attacks made several large shipping companies consider moving their business. They thought about using a different route across the Isthmus of Nicaragua. This route was offered by Commodore Vanderbilt. He even promised to hire soldiers from the Nicaraguan army to protect the gold.
How Was the Problem Solved?
The Panama Railroad Company needed help to stop the robberies. They reached out to Wells, Fargo & Company. Together, they created a private police force called the Isthmian Guard.
Who Led the Isthmian Guard?
The Isthmian Guard was led by a man named Randolph Runnels. He was an experienced former Texas Ranger. Runnels quickly identified the main leaders of the Derienni gang.
The End of the Derienni
One night in early 1852, Runnels and his team took strong action. They captured many of the gang members. This stopped the robberies for a while. However, after about six months, the robberies started again. Runnels and his men investigated once more. In late 1852, they rounded up the remaining offenders. Their actions finally brought an end to the Derienni's reign of crime.
