The official name is the Incorporated Village of Dering Harbor. This tiny village is on the north side of Shelter Island. It's just east of another small place called Shelter Island Heights.

History of Dering Harbor
Dering Harbor became an official village in 1916. When a place "incorporates," it means it gets its own local government. Before it became a village, Dering Harbor was a popular vacation spot. People enjoyed visiting it since the 1800s.
There's a story about why the village became official. Some say it was to stop too many fun, noisy attractions from being built there. They wanted to prevent it from becoming like a busy amusement park area.
