Early Life and High School Basketball
Derrek Dickey was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was very tall, standing 6 feet 7 inches! He played basketball as a forward.
In high school, he was a star player at Purcell High. This school is now called Purcell Marian High School. He was the top scorer in Cincinnati in 1968–69. He was even named one of the best players in all of Ohio.
College Career at Cincinnati
Dickey played college basketball at the University of Cincinnati. He played for three seasons, from 1970 to 1973. Back then, new students (freshmen) could not play on the main team.
During his college career, he was a strong player. He averaged 17.0 points per game. He also grabbed 11.0 rebounds per game. He led his team in rebounding all three seasons. He was also the top scorer in one of his seasons. Dickey was a team captain in both his junior and senior years. His team had a good record of 48 wins and 30 losses during his time there.
Playing in the NBA
After college, Derrek Dickey was chosen by the Golden State Warriors. This happened in the second round of the 1973 NBA Draft. He played five seasons in the NBA. He played for the Warriors and later for the Chicago Bulls.
He averaged 6.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game in his NBA career. Dickey was a very important player for the 1975 Warriors team. That year, the Warriors won the NBA Championship! During that championship season, Dickey played his best. He averaged 7.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.
Life After Playing Basketball
After his basketball playing career ended, Dickey became a color commentator. This means he helped explain the game during TV broadcasts. He often talked about University of Cincinnati basketball games.
He also worked as an analyst for other teams. These included the Sacramento Kings and the Chicago Bulls. He even worked for ESPN, a big sports TV channel.
