Derreck Lamont Hamilton (born May 20, 1966) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played college basketball at the University of Southern Mississippi in the late 1980s. Hamilton was chosen by the New Jersey Nets in the 1988 NBA draft. However, he did not sign a contract with them. Instead, he had a very long and successful career playing for many teams in Europe.
Playing Professional Basketball
Derreck Hamilton was picked by the New Jersey Nets in the 1988 NBA draft. This is where NBA teams choose new players. Even though he was drafted, he didn't join the Nets. But this didn't stop him from having a great basketball career.
He played for many years in different European leagues. He was especially well-known in the Greek League. There, he played for teams like Sporting, AEK Athens, Apollon Patras, and Irakleio.
Hamilton also played in the Spanish second division. He spent two seasons with Proexinca CB Cartagena. He also played in the Israeli League. While playing for Hapoel Jerusalem, he earned a special nickname: "The Glue." This was because he helped his team work together so well.
Before that, he also played for other Israeli clubs. These included Hapoel Holon and Hapoel Eilat. Towards the end of his career in Europe, he played for the Russian Super League team Dynamo Moscow.
Family Life
Derreck Hamilton comes from a family of talented athletes.
- His cousin is Antonio Lang. Antonio also played basketball for Duke University. He won two NCAA titles there. Antonio also played in the NBA and overseas before becoming a coach.
- His older brother is Angelo Hamilton. Angelo led Connors State College to a national title in 1990. He later played at the University of Oklahoma and also overseas.
- Derreck's son is Kyle Hamilton. Kyle is a professional football player. He plays as a safety for the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL.
