Derrick Lanorris Sharp is an American-Israeli former professional basketball player. He was born on October 5, 1971. Derrick played as a point guard or shooting guard. He was about 6 feet, 1 inch tall.
Derrick Sharp played for the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team for 15 years. He was even the team's captain for some of that time. After he stopped playing, he became an assistant coach for the team. With Maccabi, he won an amazing 29 club titles! He retired from playing basketball in July 2011. He continued as an assistant coach until August 2013.

Early Life and College Basketball
Derrick Sharp was born in Orlando, Florida. He went to Evans High School in Orlando. There, he played high school basketball.
After high school, Derrick played college basketball. He played for Brevard Community College from 1989 to 1991. Then, he played for the University of South Florida with the South Florida Bulls from 1991 to 1993.
Derrick Sharp's Professional Playing Career
Derrick Sharp started his professional career in 1993. He joined Maccabi Hadera in Israel's second division. From 1994 to 1996, he played for Hapoel Migdal-HaEmek.
Joining Maccabi Tel Aviv
In 1996, Derrick made a big move. He joined Maccabi Tel Aviv, one of the most famous teams in Israel. With Maccabi Tel Aviv, Sharp became a fan favorite. People loved his strong defense and his ability to make important three-point shots.
Winning Championships
Derrick Sharp helped Maccabi Tel Aviv win many championships. He won 13 Israeli national league titles. He also won 11 Israeli State Cups and 2 Israeli League Cups. On top of that, he won three major European titles. These included the 2001 FIBA SuproLeague and two EuroLeague championships in 2004 and 2005.
The Famous "Sharp Shot"
One of his most famous moments happened on April 8, 2004. It was a EuroLeague game against Zalgiris Kaunas from Lithuania. Maccabi Tel Aviv was losing by 3 points with only 2 seconds left. If they lost, they would be out of the tournament.
Derrick Sharp caught a long pass from Gur Shelef. He quickly turned and shot a three-pointer. The ball went in, tying the game! This forced the game into overtime. Maccabi Tel Aviv won that game and went on to win the EuroLeague championship that year.
Retirement from Playing
Derrick Sharp retired from playing professional basketball in July 2011. He was 39 years old. He played professional basketball in Israel for 18 years. Fifteen of those years were with Maccabi Tel Aviv. He is one of Maccabi Tel Aviv's top scorers in European games.
Playing for the Israeli National Team
Derrick Sharp became an Israeli citizen. He then played for the senior Israeli national team. He played for Israel from 2000 to 2003. He represented Israel in the 2001 EuroBasket and the 2003 EuroBasket tournaments.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Derrick Sharp became an assistant coach for Maccabi Tel Aviv. He had taken a coaching course in 2010. He worked as an assistant coach until August 2, 2013.
Personal Life
In the mid-1990s, Derrick Sharp married an Israeli woman. This allowed him to become an Israeli citizen. They had one son who also played basketball in Israel. Later, in 1999, he married Canadian basketball player Justine Ellison. They have four children together. One of their sons, Emanuel Sharp, plays basketball for the University of Houston team.
Derrick Sharp and his family lived in Herzliya, Israel, until August 2013. Then, they moved to Orlando, Florida. His son from his first marriage later returned to Israel to play basketball. Derrick Sharp now lives in Tampa, Florida. He is currently the Varsity Boys' Head Basketball Coach at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School.
