Derrick Lanorris Sharp (Hebrew: דריק שארפ; born October 5, 1971) is an American-Israeli former professional basketball player. He played as a point guard and shooting guard.

Derrick Sharp played for the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team for 15 years. He was even the team's captain for some of that time. Later, he became an assistant coach for the team. With Maccabi, he won a huge number of titles – 29 in total!

In July 2011, Sharp stopped playing professional basketball. He was 39 years old. After retiring as a player, he stayed with Maccabi Tel Aviv as an assistant coach until August 2013.

Early Life and College Basketball

Derrick Sharp was born in Orlando, Florida. He went to Evans High School in Orlando, where he played high school basketball.

After high school, Sharp played college basketball. He played for Brevard Community College from 1989 to 1991. Then, he played for the University of South Florida with the South Florida Bulls from 1991 to 1993.

Professional Basketball Career

Sharp started his professional career in 1993 with Maccabi Hadera. This team was in the Israeli 2nd Division at the time. From 1994 to 1996, he played for Hapoel Migdal-HaEmek.

His big break came when he joined Maccabi Tel Aviv. This is the most famous basketball team in Israel.

With Maccabi Tel Aviv, Sharp won many championships:

  • 13 Israeli national league championships.
  • 11 Israeli State Cups.
  • 2 Israeli League Cups.
  • 3 European titles: the 2001 FIBA SuproLeague, the 2004 EuroLeague, and the 2005 EuroLeague.

Fans loved Sharp because of his strong defense, great three-point shots, and amazing plays in important moments. One of his most famous moments happened on April 8, 2004. It was a EuroLeague game against the Lithuanian team Zalgiris Kaunas. Maccabi Tel Aviv was losing by 3 points with only 2 seconds left. If they lost, they would be out of the tournament. Sharp caught a long pass, turned, and shot a game-tying three-pointer! This forced the game into overtime. Maccabi Tel Aviv won that game and went on to win the EuroLeague championship that year.

Derrick Sharp retired from playing basketball in July 2011. He played professional basketball in Israel for 18 years, with 15 of those years at Maccabi Tel Aviv. He is one of Maccabi Tel Aviv's top scorers in European games.

Playing for the National Team

Sharp became an Israeli citizen. He then played for the senior Israeli national team from 2000 to 2003. He played in the 2001 EuroBasket and the 2003 EuroBasket tournaments.

Coaching Career

After he stopped playing, Sharp became an assistant coach for Maccabi Tel Aviv. He had taken a coaching course in 2010. On August 2, 2013, Sharp left his role as an assistant coach for Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Later, Sharp moved back to Florida in the United States. He became the head coach of the boys' basketball team at Blake High School in Tampa. Currently, he is the Varsity Boys' Head Basketball Coach at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School in Pasco County, Florida.

Personal Life

In the mid-1990s, Derrick Sharp married an Israeli woman. This allowed him to become an Israeli citizen. They had one son, who also played basketball in Israel. In 1999, he married Canadian basketball player Justine Ellison. They have four children together: three sons and a daughter.
