Musical Beginnings
Descemer Bueno started his music career playing bass guitar with the Cuban singer Santiago Feliú. After studying music, he became a music teacher. In 1990, he started his own jazz group called Estado de Animo. The band was successful and toured countries like Spain, Germany, and Argentina.
In 1998, Bueno moved to the United States to study music production at Stanford University in California. Getting into Stanford was a huge moment for him, as he was chosen from over 2,500 people who applied. He later said that this experience changed his life and put him on the path to success.
After his studies, Bueno lived in New York and helped start a new band called Yerba Buena. He wrote or co-wrote many songs for their first album, President Alien. The band's music became popular and was even used in American movies and Pepsi commercials.
Writing and Producing for Others
Bueno later moved back to Cuba to help other young musicians. He produced, arranged, and wrote songs for artists like Haydée Milanés and William Vivanco.
He also became involved in movie music. He helped write the music for the film Habana Blues (2005). For this work, he and his team won a Goya Award, which is a major film award in Spain, for Best Original Music. His songs were also featured in the movie Habana Eva, which won awards at film festivals in New York and Los Angeles.
Solo Career and Famous Songs
In 2005, Descemer Bueno released his first solo album, Siete Rayo. It was a mix of hip-hop and Cuban music and featured George Pajon from the famous group the Black Eyed Peas. In 2012, he released his second album, Bueno, which included songs with many other Cuban artists.
Working with Enrique Iglesias
Bueno's biggest international success came from working with pop star Enrique Iglesias. He helped write songs for Iglesias's albums Euphoria and ... and Love.
Together, they wrote the song "Bailando". The song became a massive hit all over the world. It featured Bueno himself, along with the group Gente de Zona. "Bailando" won several Latin Grammy Awards in 2014, including the award for "Song of the Year."
Bueno also co-wrote the hit song "Cuando Me Enamoro" for Enrique Iglesias and Juan Luis Guerra, and "Súbeme la Radio" for Iglesias.
