Descemer's Early Music Journey
Descemer Bueno studied music and even became a music teacher. In 1990, he formed a jazz band called Estado de Animo. Other members included guitarist Elmer Ferrer and pianist Roberto Carcassés.
His band traveled a lot in the 1990s, performing in countries like Spain, Bolivia, Uruguay, Germany, and Argentina. In 1998, Descemer also played in the United States with a jazz group called Column B.
Studying Music in the U.S.
Bueno continued his music studies at Stanford University in California. He earned a degree in music production in 1998. He was one of only 60 students accepted out of over 2500 people who applied. Descemer often says that getting into this famous university changed his life. He once said, "I was a nerdy music student in Cuba that found the right path to success."
During this time, Bueno was also an artist-in-residence at Stanford University. He spent a year teaching at the University of South Africa in Cape Town.
Joining Yerba Buena
In 1999, Descemer moved to New York. There, he helped start a Cuban Latin fusion band called Yerba Buena. He wrote or co-wrote many songs for their first album, President Alien. Yerba Buena's music was even used in several U.S. movies and commercials.
Returning to Cuba
Later, Bueno moved back to Cuba. He started working as a producer, arranger, and composer for young Cuban musicians. He helped create music for artists like Haydée Milanés, William Vivanco, and Yusa.
He also helped compose music for the film Habana Blues (2005). For this work, he was part of the group that won a Goya award in 2006 for Best Original Music. Many of his songs were also in the movie Habana Eva. This film won Best Film at the New York International Latino Film Festival and the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival.
Bueno also wrote a collection of bolero songs for singer Fernando Alvarez. He wrote these songs just before Alvarez passed away in 2002.
