Deschampsia elongata is a type of grass often called slender hairgrass. It's a plant that grows in many parts of North and South America. This grass gets its name because its stems and flowers look thin and delicate, like hair.
Where Slender Hairgrass Grows
Slender hairgrass is a native plant in western North America. You can find it from Alaska all the way down to Wyoming and northern Mexico. It also grows in South America, especially in Chile. This grass is very adaptable. It can grow in many different places, from low valleys to high mountains. It especially likes areas where the ground is a bit wet.
What Slender Hairgrass Looks Like
Slender hairgrass is a perennial grass. This means it lives for more than two years. It often grows in thick bunches or clumps. These clumps can sometimes be taller than a person, reaching over one meter high! Most of its leaves grow in a neat bunch right at the bottom of the plant.
The flowers of the slender hairgrass grow in a special part called an inflorescence. This part looks like a thin line of V-shaped little flower clusters. These clusters are arranged neatly, almost flat against the main stem.
