Deserted River: A Short Journey
The Deserted River is found on the South Coast of British Columbia. It flows generally southwest into the eastern part of Jervis Inlet. This area is near a place called Malibu, British Columbia.
What's in a Name?
The river got its name from Deserted Bay, where it ends. The British Admiralty, a group from the United Kingdom, named Deserted Bay in 1860. The name "Deserted" comes from an old village of the Shishalh (Sechelt) people. This village was on the south shore of the bay. The people moved away from the village because of problems with grizzly bears, leaving it empty. Before it was called Deserted River, its name was Tsuahdie. This old name means "place to shelter."
How Long is the River?
The Deserted River is about 13 kilometers (8 miles) long. It also includes the 1.2 kilometers (0.7 miles) length of Deserted Lake, which doesn't have an official name. The river and its east branch, Tsuahdi Creek, help drain the western side of the mountains. These mountains are between the Jervis Inlet area and the Elaho River to the east.
Deserted River Falls
The river starts from the south end of Deserted Lake. From there, it plunges down about 670 meters (2,200 feet). There are also other smaller waterfalls, making the total drop about 830 meters (2,720 feet). This main waterfall is not officially named or measured. However, people know it as Deserted River Falls.
