Deshler is a small village located in Henry County, Ohio, United States. It's a friendly place where about 1,588 people lived according to the 2020 census. Deshler is known for its important role in railroad history.

History of Deshler

Deshler was officially planned and marked out on a map in 1873. It was named after John G. Deshler, who owned the land where the village was built. A post office opened in Deshler in 1872, helping people send and receive mail. The village became an official town in 1876.

Since the early 1900s, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was very important to Deshler. It brought many jobs and helped the local economy. Deshler was even called "The Crossroads of the B&O." This was because two major train lines crossed here. One line went from Detroit/Toledo to Cincinnati, and the other, a very busy mainline, connected Chicago to Washington, D.C.

Today, a company called CSX Transportation owns and runs both of these train lines.

Geography and Railroads

Deshler is located in Ohio and covers an area of about 2.30 square miles (6.02 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

The streets in Deshler are designed around the railroad lines. This shows how important trains have always been to the village.

CSX Transportation still operates two major train lines that run through Deshler. These lines were once part of the Baltimore and Ohio and Chessie System railroads. About 50 to 70 trains pass through Deshler every day. This makes it a popular spot for people who love watching trains!

You can even watch trains live from Deshler! A YouTube channel called Virtual Railfan has a continuous live video feed from the "diamond" intersection. This is where the two train lines cross. You can also watch trains from "Crossroads Park." The old train station that used to be at this spot was taken down on August 11, 2022.
